allrocketspsl
So my ball mill is under construction and almost ready to make lots of BP for the fourth! I soon will need a Jar, and there seems to be no cheap way out here. Even a 6" PVC DIY jar is going to run $50.00 in fittings. Have you guys found a source of heavy duty durable food containers for ball mill use? Is PVC DIY the recommended way to go? Any other mill jar ideas i may be missing? I was going to use 6" HDPE pipe instead of PVC as i heard it was more durable, however, one post on this site experienced static electricity issues when using HDPE. Another forum member was using epoxy filled end cap inserts, and still others use rubber end caps on a reducer to keep the charge in the jar. Which method works best to avoid spillage? I woudl appeciate your insight!lowes ell 6 inch caps 5.49 dollars green drainage pipe 6 by 24 inches 15.50 dollars 25.00 plus tax total
pyrogeorge
These type of jars as i get in my hands isn't hard enough and you can push the plastic inside.Aslo i know that is hdpe.So i would like to ask if it need more time to grind BP becouse of this. http://www.curtec.com/imgsize.php?w=350&h=350&img=uploads/Product%20thumbs/7006.jpg In my jar,it is difficult to push the body and i think that it affect the milling.More hard jar less time need to powder the composition..or not? Mumbles
The majority of the grinding happens between the media, not between the media and walls. It may make a difference, but probably not all that large in terms of milling time. The area where it could possibly make more of a difference is in durability, and life time of the jar itself. I've always really liked the look and design of the jar you posted the image of.

I have those jars and they are perfect for ballmilling, I really like the wide neck design. The jar wall is 2mm thick, that's plenty for HDPE. http://shrani.si/t/B/Z8/102Gtd9R/img533.jpg http://shrani.si/t/3P/H2/1Nd81c0O/img531.jpg http://shrani.si/t/1o/IL/1HLMwzFZ/img530.jpg They don't leek at all because of rubber seal in the cap. RobertoDuran121
Could a ball mill explode?Probably unlikley but possible and pvc when blown up creates a bunch of tiny shards and being lightweight fly a great distance and cant be detected by x-ray so if it ever did explode and a person was near death is a possibility. mike_au
It's a sealed container full of explosive material, yeah it could explode. I've heard the claims about PVC being invisible to x-ray before but I believe that might be a myth, not that I imagine that makes having it dug out of you any more pleasant. Bobosan
Well, death is a possibility in anything we do without good safety practices. PVC appears to be the norm for larger than 4" ball mill jars and used by many without incident. PVC is also very noisy when rotating with a media charge. Shadowcat1969
After a bit of searching on the web, it does appear to be a myth that PVC doesn't show up on XRay. Even if it was transparent to Xrays one of the other medical imagery types should be able to spot it. That being said, yes, ball mills have exploded, and if you were in proximity, especially without proper bunkering of the mill, one would have a lot of shrapnel from various sources to deal with regardless of what material the jar is made of.
