He might be talking about a NOAB (nine on a board) in which case i don't recomend reloading them, they're most likely too weak and your shells might not fit. a good thing to do if your in a pinch for tubes is to go down to your local scrap yard and see if you can find some steel pipe that will your shells will fit in, cut it, plug it, and bury it almost flat with the ground, they usually sell by the pound so it should be cheaper than a NOAB anyway. good luck.

Well crazyboy, right now I'm on vacation so I'm looking everywhere.

And steel pipe will work wow I know someone in set design for plays and he has alot of steel pipe lying around. This just means I'll have to make quite a bit of QM. Its not that its hard its that its boring.

I'd recommend just buying some HDPE from pyrogear.net, they are excellent and at very reasonable prices.

HDPE rips/tears resulting in pieces flying with less velocity and not sharp edges where as ABS and PVC will shatter somewhat like glass resulting in faster sharper fragments. How many times must we go over this? If your going to use metal, you want to make sure it is very strong and of the kind that is more prone to deforming into weird banana like shapes in a catastrophic explosion instead of shattering throwing more shrapnel. And not simply pipe iron, you want good steel. And of course you need to bury steel mortars 2/3 to 3/4 underground/sand a good barrier between you and the mortar is a good idea too.

I know I had something else to say... but it escapes me.

yeah that is pretty fast alright what are you getting at though everyone knows alder buckthorn makes good Bp i just wish i had some... having BP that fast really isn't nessacerry i mean its nice but if your BP is of decent speed all you have to do is here comes the secret.....USE MORE.

found this on wiki

Another European species, Alder Buckthorn (R. frangula, syn. Frangula alnus) was of major military importance in the 15th to 19th centuries, as its wood provided the best quality charcoal for gunpowder manufacture.

who knew.

I went to a grocery store and got a three inch cardboard mortar for a big thing of saran wrap. Bob, oh you be I will be burying it and getting a great distance between me and the mortar.

mormanman, Try this, it works great for me. I scavenge thin cardboard tubes from carpet rolls and such from jobsites and then reinforce them with multiple layers of glued-up kraft on the outside. You get the benefit of a very exact inside bore, and you can make them as strong as you want with exterior build-up. And they're FREE, which is a wonderful price.

Find someone who does professional wallpapering, the wallpaper comes in huge rolls on 2.5" ID convolute tubes, they are very strong. Also, I believe some kinds of sheet metal come on cardboard tubes - Bonny has some 3" ID tubes with a 5/8" wall like cplmac uses for his monster rockets. He gave me a couple 3"x1/2"x4' tubes for mortars.

A snippet of a PM I had with Jacob:

Actually daughters birthday today, but all 3 kids love pyro.

Son asked me today... "Dad, is it legal for you to make fireworks?"

Me... "Well Nick, that's sort of a gray area."

Nick... "What's a gray area?"

Me laughing... "Gray areas allow me to justify what I'm doing."

Creepy...

So how did everyone's firings go?

I only lit some consumer fireworks, fun as always :)

I decided to wait with the waterfall, since I doubt it's dry (made yesterday).

Well I fired up a very very weird thing tonight, but atleast it worked :D so I will explane:

It was a canister shell on a stick :D the stick was like 3m tall and a long fuse attached to it I lit the fuse jumped off the chair and run, it ws actually very nice! I will be posting a image in the shell thread today (like 6pm because it is now 3.37am)

My 1lb rocket failed, In my haste to get it done I decided not to mill the fuel (60/30/10), warning signs were going off when I couldn't light a small pile with a match. The rocket ended up being a inverted fountain :)

I had a mixed bag of success/failure in my show tonight, but mostly success. I had a 4 oz. rocket motor blow -through and light the 2" ball-shell (granite stars)header that blew at about 20 feet and made a very up-close-and-personal experience, and a 2" ball shell mortar with Euters blue stars that must have had the time fuse blow out because is made a very nice star-mine instead of a shell. On the flip side I had a few very nice 2" shells, 1 lb. coreburners with 2-1/2" headers of D-1 glitter, Win#6 glitter, and my RSIII red star (similar to ruby red), a 3-1/2" tigertail shell with a 20gm 70/30 break that was a sky-filling crowd pleaser, and a 1 lb. endburner that carried a 30gm 70/30 header to a wonderful echoing finale.

The funniest part of the night was when a spent canister shell fell and chased my wife across the back deck. A 2" D-1 canister shell caught fire and, as it fell, it seemed to have a laser sight on her as she backed away, then backed away faster, then finally sprinted away as it chased her. It was funny as in, everybody else thought it was funny.....like I guess my sleeping on the couch will be funny. HEY, that's not funny.......

Happy New Year all.

Slide over amigo, there's room for the two of us on that couch. I thought firing off my cannon once an hour was funny too. Until the neighbors called my wife complaining that their dog "evacuated his bowels" on their carpeting after the last shot.

Dear god, I was laughing/crying my one good eye out! Apparently, my wife didn't "see" the humor there. Tough shit. I've got one more shot already loaded... it wouldn't be safe to leave that in the cannon. Gotta fire it off.

In for a penny, in for a pound. I'm already screwed over... so what the hell. This is the most fun I've had sober in years. Yee haaa.

Oh my mom's buddy changed his mind again and got a cardboard mailing tube. Can't stand on it but it will launch a couple of shells. Thanks for the help though guys.

Did anyone video their merriment? I love to see some of the items you all lit off. The only thing I lit was myself...broke out a bottle of 2000 Laffite Rothschild Medoc I was saving for the last few years (still have one left :) ) and did my part in emptying four bottles of champagne with friends.

Thought it was best if I left the pile of 2 & 3in salutes home rather then succumbing to the "brilliant idea" of lighting them off in a residential street at midnight..., "Happy…hic… New Year, officer...hic…"

Worked the 29th through today setting up and taking down the 2 displays. Good stuff. The company was Western Enterprises. Apparently they do most of the shows in Texas. So now I'll be getting many more shows to crew on. Good stuff. Awesome people to work with. Very knowledgeable on both how to properly fire displays and the chemistry behind the fireworks. And very nice hosts.

Now I'm pretty much dead tired.

My waterfall was also made yesterday so it will still be drying for a few days.

I made 1 small whistle and a 1" ID mixed effect fountain from leftover stuff. It had over 10 ft of height a few times as it kept changing... blue, gold, red, silver, green.

None of my stuff dried in time, so no fireworks for me. Much of my merriment is video taped/captured by film, but most are not things I would be wishing to share. I am sure many here would get a kick out of it however. You'd be suprised what kind of mischief can ensue in 16 hours fueled by cheap beer, jack daniels, and Jagermeister. The cheap beer and Jagermeister were not exactly my idea. I too ended up on the couch, but not at the demand of a significant other.

well i shot off a bunch of stuff some of which was successful some not so much. we all had a good time we went through several thousand commercial firecrackers. we lit off about 30 commercial 1.75" shells there was a small commercial show that i git to help fire and setup consisting of 2 4" shells a 100 shot cake and some 2" and 3" mines shells and comets. we also burnt 150 Christmas trees.

as promised i have some videos with more to come when i upload them...

Nice full break on the 4in D1 can...looked great. Shame about the comet...what was the cannule diameter in the can? Did you break it with straight BP or use a booster?

Also liked the Pearl mine...very nice.
