i was looking through the news on Yahoo when i noticed this..

By TOM HAYS and CRISTIAN SALAZAR, Associated Press Writers Tom Hays And Cristian Salazar, Associated Press Writers – 8 mins ago NEW YORK – Police found an "amateurish" but potentially powerful bomb in a smoking sport utility vehicle in Times Square, then cleared the streets of thousands of tourists milling through the landmark district so they could dismantle it, authorities said Sunday.

"We avoided what we could have been a very deadly event," Mayor Michael Bloomberg said. "It certainly could have exploded and had a pretty big fire and a decent amount of explosive impact."

Investigators removed three propane tanks, fireworks, two filled 5-gallon gasoline containers, and two clocks with batteries, electrical wire and other components from the back of the Nissan Pathfinder, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said. A black metal box resembling a gun locker was also recovered and will be detonated off site, he said.

Bloomberg called the explosive device "amateurish" and Kelly said the explosives were consumer-grade fireworks but could have caused huge damage on a block of Broadway theaters and restaurants teeming with tourists.

consumer-grade fireworks huh...? this is just the thing that makes it that much harder for us, serious and dedicated pyros trying to truthfully do something as a hobby, safely and within the rules... :(I just thought that everyone might want to see this.. anyways heres the full link...

It is always annoying when newspapers report serious hobbyists as evil b*mbers planning to destroy the world, but this does actually sound a little bit like they were trying to blow something up. It's a shame that they tried to use fireworks in their device but I think that it would be clear to anyone that these people are misusing the various items and clearly aren't representative of the average user.

No one is going to use this to try and ban gas tanks and jerry cans, I would be surprised if they went after fireworks.

i would agree, i dont think that they are targeting us pyros, i just think that having mentioned that the "main" bomb component was fireworks. It just may make people more leery about those of us "which is everyone of us" that have the components to make firworks.

True, it might be a good idea for anyone in that area to lay low for a little while.

If you read the article, they found flash powder and fertilizer at his house. This is another huge blow to pyro people. I think now it will be even harder to get chems like KCLO4 after this crap.

Hope they put him away forever.

I hear what you are saying but that flash could have come from a cracker. BTW- what is "standard green fertilizer"?

It amazes me the things that are and are not available in the States! Search ebay for "Dynamite clock" What an EOD specialist would say about one of those after his "adrenaline is brown" walk up to it......

This fucking clown used M88's, small gas cans, and propane. M88's are the equivalent of small firecrackers, LOL. This guy has to be as smart as a pile of rocks. Now he is going to go away for the rest of his life.

no idea, maybe he planned the common ammonium nitrate/diesel fuel bomb, but he was probably not intelligent enough to pull that off.
