My first big shell 6"

Recommended Posts

I have not shared anything with APC for a long time, I have not learned to much. Since my last publications in the forum I made many shells and I do experiments but without innovating too much.

This time I think it's a good time to share with the forum this 6" shell, it is the biggest that I made and I would like "the pro shells

buildiers" to give me advice of everything that could be improve this shell.

That's a good catch. I didn't notice how much lift was used. 100g probably would have sufficed if your lift is good. It was a nice shell and overall the build looked pretty good.

Just curious about a couple of things. Is there any reason you added what looks like an extra disk or cardboard circle after pasting the shell? What size comets are those? I bet you could fit a 19th comet in that ring if you tried, or maybe wrapped a turn or two of chipboard around your former. That gap looks pretty large.

Just a few small details, but it's typical to use 32 verticals on a 6" shell. It looks like you might have used 24. Depending on the strength of your string you may also want to think about doubling up the strands. You may also want to think about extending the paste wrap a little bit to lay up against the fuse. It helps to fireproof and reinforce that joint, which is one of the weak spots on a shell.

You used too much lift may 9% be also good. Ps the chipboard tube survived?

Seriously? I was afraid that the shell would not rise, for that reason the lift is a little overpassed. Yes the mortar tube is in perfect conditions! the plaster plug survive to the shoot.

Thanks Mumbles. The extra disk is a shock absorber, I know that if the shell is correctly build is not necessary but I think that is an extra prevention to secure the shoot. The comets size are 20mm/0,78inch. "That gap looks pretty large." Yep, I think the same, in next shells Im going to fix that failure....

Thanks for the other tips, in the next shell I will protect the fuse more. Regarding the string, I realized at the end that I should have put doubles at least in the verticals... Regarding the number of lines, I did not know, I will also consider it.

Thanks for the answers!

From the video, it was a pretty shell to look at so it's a good design. Whether it can be improved only you can say, little things like the gap on the star rings show out from the build pictures, could be changed (Bigger stars or even spacing) Height could be changed lo lower the break etc. But that's all tinkering with an OK shell design.

Wow my last shell (3") destroyed the chipboard mortar, luckily I putted it inside an iron 4"tube...i used the 9% and the (5 timed reports) shell fly at 50-70 Mt in 2 second. The reports inside continued to fly up after the break before exploding just the bottom shot lost some meters. Edited by kingkama

Very basic remark: I love the sticker idea, making the thing looks "official", might do it one day also, to avoid stupid questions.. well done! Edited by Sulphurstan
