yannismanesis Posted January 31 Posted January 31 One of my favourites! Question, what would happen if you made this with KNO3?
Zumber Posted January 31 Posted January 31 Sodium nitrate and potassium nitrate both are oxidizers, but use of sodium nitrate may produce more golden flashes just like sodium oxalate in glitters. Give out a try by preparing small batch it might alter effect slightly.
Mumbles Posted February 3 Posted February 3 If you made it with potassium nitrate, it's basically Chrysanthemum 8 with some coarse MgAl in it. Coarse MgAl has the tendency to create delayed flashing effects. It would probably look somewhat similar, but more white. I don't know that it will be the same, there is something special about sodium nitrate in some of these streamer compositions.

I also read somewhere a guy who lined the inside ball shell halves with pvc kitchen film, and sealed the contents of each shell half with this before closing the shell. Somewhat OT but... All of the kitchen films available in the US now basically suck because Dow decided to use environmentalists complaining about PVC as an excuse to stop their expensive PVDC manufacturing for Saran (which didn't do anything to help the environment, nor did anyone quit using PVC, but they spun it as an environmentally friendly thing because all chlorinated plastics were evil and saved themselves a ton of money switching to PE film that doesn't work). PVDC film effectively excludes nearly all atmospheric gases as well as moisture. The diffusion rate for oxygen through it is so low it might as well not be happening. Other materials work but need to be much thicker to get the same level of protection / blocking and don't have the nice property of sticking to themselves and pretty much any other material. Metallized BoPET (Mylar) works but is far more expensive and doesn't have the versatility. Thankfully the fine folks of Japan aren't as big of cheapskates / idiots and you can still buy the real pre-2000s material PVDC / Saran wrap on Amazon or eBay... look for Asahi KASEI Wrap (seems to be the better of the two) or NEW Kure / Kureha wrap. 150' rolls are about $10 shipped on amazon. I just recently found out about this stuff and ordered some and my days of having to cram all leftovers into ziplocks or tupperware are finally over. If you're younger you might not even remember kitchen wrap not sucking and you should do yourself a favor and order a roll. 🙂
