All info needed to turn some lame Excalibur shells into powerful, loud, huge mines will be put up before July 3rd.

Well it seems that within the last few years they have completely changed the way Excalibur shells are made. I was surprised to see clay plugs when I opened one up. They used to be made with cups sets and were filled with stars, loose powder, and rice hulls. Now they are just filled with stars in some kind of burst powder, and it's packed in there SOLID!!! I'd be surprise if the fire even get to the other end of the shell. The shell is overall a heavy paper tube with two clay plugs that are covered with a thin paper cap, then they finish it off with a colorful outer wrap and a couple of paper discs. Another thing I noticed was that they no longer use actual time fuse for the shells. Now the Excals are fused with some sort of visco, although it was covered with some slurry, it almost looked like a piece of black match. I'll examine that some more later and find out what it really is.

Keeping with my original idea, which can be employed on other shells, I added some rice hulls to the stars to illustrate how the original concept worked.

The materials needed, minus the extra rice hulls I threw in later.

Open up the shells, save the lift and stars. You can also see the new clay plug and thick tube they are employing now.

Screen out the fine powders, dispose of this in an appropriate manner. Back in the day, this would leave you with stars and rice hulls mixed together, here you can see the extra hulls I threw in to show how it used to be.

Take you toilet paper tube, cut the ends a few times so the can be pleated down.

Add tape :D Just a few pieces to hold the bottom shut. Add some tape to the fast visco leader so it doesn't spray fire while its burning through the mine. I also added a small piece of visco so I can light the thing with out roasting my fingers with that leader fuse.

Tape in the leader, and drop in the lift. Cover the lift with a small piece of tissue paper.

Add the star/rice hull mix.

Cut to pleat once more.

Add more tape to hold those down. :D DONE!!!!

Likely there will be debris left behind after the shot, clean this out before shooting anything else.

Video of the mine I made:

I did shoot a fan from my rack, not of these mines, but ones built in a similar fashion. I'll see about getting a picture from it, if not, I'll post the whole video, it was in my little show.

I gathered some other canister shells to take apart and see how they are made, might post new info soon.

Very nice that looks like slow flash or some kind of flash other than 70/30 this type of flash makes molten droplets that stick to the stars very well thats why they still look good the new clay plugs just a way to speed things up cost less than paper and disks very nice tutorial !
