I know it is fun to make your own labeling and such but think again..

These days of terrorism and other such crap isn't it better you keep your devices "low key".

If you would get busted for making crackers and they see you pack them in your own designed packaging they will think you are selling them and that will the charges against you even harder..

I am just telling this in your own best interest. I like nice labeling and such on my devices too but wel, you get the point. ^_^

Hmmm, i never really thought of that. Thanks for the heads up, but personally think that no amature pyro should sell their devices, no matter how good, its just asking for trouble.

You and I know you are not selling them, but try to convince Uncle Sam of this when you are busted already violating the law by making them..

They don't care if you are a decent pyro or not.. -_-

I've seen discussion on the PML and some other areas, maybe it was rec.pyrotechnics newsgroup, that talk about labeling of amateur devices.

The problem is, once you label it like an item of commerce, agencies can regard it as a professional device, which gives a LOT more agencies jurisdiction over how to screw you up. The ATFE doesn't care about amateur stuff except for proper storage, the CPSC has NO jurisdiction (until you slap that label on it, OR give, sell, or transfer to someone else), the local law of course, has jurisdiction no matter what.

Using decorative wrap, etc should be fine. Just avoid the 'professional' looking labels, unless you want them to be treated as professional under the law. Heh... might as well put the official "if found contact the local police and fire department" label, along with your name and phone number !

Some clubs have regulations about labeling. A friend of mine who's in the WPAG said that they're supposed to label their devices. It's supposed to have the size, effect, manufacturer, and the "dangerous explosive, do not handle if found" type of warning. I hear that it's not efforced though.

Back to the topic at hand. I don't decorate my devices really. I know of people who have that one shell they've been working on for god knows how long, and decorate them. Wrap them in colored paper, or christmas wrapping paper. I know the chinese shells are decorated. Those really huge ones have prayers or other decorations for good luck and what not for the year from their festival.

Nice crackers delmator!

Check this post from UKR. These aren't mine, but they're a great example of amateur English pyro with traditional labelling.

I quite like the look of plain kraft on finished devices, but occasionally wrap them in metallic/coloured paper and use some fancy RWB visco. Haven't gone so far as to actually design labels for them yet, but I'm sure I will sometime. I've heard of people recreating old fireworks by using labels from sites like this.

mmm, so i can make labels and stuff, but just keep out the warnings and such, would that be ok? or is it still a bit sus? ^_^

If it *looks* professional, authorities would treat it as such. Using that decorative wrap is cool. Just no "Joe's Fireworks" label, etc... I think a lable such as ' 4" Crossette ' or whatever is ok also.

I would put something on it like this:

Amature pyrotechnic device

If found please leave alone for your own best interest. This was a test device but if this tekst is still readeble it probably can still harm you.

This text is mearly added for safety porpose of this test device only.

If found on a dangerous place please dump it in a bucket of water for at least 24 hours before throwing it way.

Pretty long, but shows you do it safe and do not intend to sell or harm someone with it.

Of course my shit does not leave my own ground so I don't need to add text.

And please make sure if you say the thing about the water that it does not ignite in concact with water -_-

I have applied different decorated wrapping paper to my rockets to make them look more professional but it is more hassle than it's worth. Now I just spray paint them with some cheap red or flat black paint to make them look more sinister :D . I agree with the other guys when it comes to labeling. In the current environment of post 911 paranoia severe discretion is highly advisable.

I personally like the look of plain kraft paper. It makes it look more like a class B or display device rather than a consumer one! Which since mine are display size usually it makes more sense.

I do howevor put a nice label on the side.... It just says the type of device, effect, and size.... then at the bottom I always put in smaller font ... Pyrohawk Pyrotechnics.. Hehehe maybe not a great idea as I guess it does make it seem like its a company.....never thought about it...

An example of mine are My Avatar!
