4 th of July 2014 - Rockets - ( 5 videos)

Hi All,

Here are the rockets I launched over the weekend, We had a great time, my first 4th with my own shells and rockets. I had to launch over a few days, we had very windy weather on Saturday and changed plans for safety. These are hand rammed 1# BP 75 15 10 pine coal , 2%oil, bottom lit, on tooling that I made.

Hey Matt,

Looked real nice mate. Looks like you have your fuel nice and warm:). First couple were a bit scary. Do you have any personal inklings why the first couple turned so viciously? Love a good few rockets.

Also one other thing... These are nozzled rockets yes? I am really assuming here, but is your first rammer- the one that presses the clay. Is it divergent, creating a convergent-divergent nozzle?

Hi Jess,

Yes "Warm " Fuel, I have been working at taming them with my new BP made with my own Pine Coal, seems I need to bottom light to prevent cato with this BP.

 

As far as the turn, Only one really turned( spider stars), the others were pointed in different directions. I think my sticks were too thin, 1/4" x 1/4" x 2 feet. I should have put two on each rocket, I was testing the " no balance " theory, just need drag. the spiral on one would support the stick flexing too much. One stick worked on 3 of them well, Barley on the spiral , and not on the Spider one that turned to the right. These were cut from scarps in the wood shop and were of different woods.

Thanks VP, now I have my rockets back with my new BP, I look forward to launching a few "copy cat" headers from your videos, I have a 5" canister of farfalle ready to go but that will need my 3# rockets, and I have yet to test those with this new powder...... also I have shied away from home rolled tubes with this powder, just NEPT for now. Also just bought a press, and am in the process of beefing up my rammers from wood to Aluminum for the press.

Thanks Bobosan, yes it is quite exciting I also launched some shells and canisters that I will post soon in the aerials section. Unfortunately with the weather and safety concerns I was not able to send most of my bigger stuff up...... just have to wait for another day !

Awesome Matt,

I think you will benefit greatly from pressing! I was just asking about details as they sound different to most. I thought it had something to do with la nozzle. It's inset a bit too yeh?

Look forward to watch the next instalment. I love these rockets. I need to stop running 'tests' and get some beauties in the air like this!

Thank you Jess, I Really like Rockets !! such incredible lifting power. these payloads are a fraction of what these rockets will carry, these headers were between 180g - 220g

 

Keep testing till you feel ready, don't rush your testing or end it too soon, I tested a lot, lots of flour filled containers went into the air, stop watch timer to estimate the height, firecrackers in top of rockets to test the delay timing before any headers were installed. Then I changed my BP and testing began all over again. ( but that's half the fun is "testing" ) :D

Couldn't agree more!

I started with 1lb motors and I didnt lift any shells til I could lift a 600gram payload, to a safe height. I used a shell full of sand (a bit heavier and smaller to not affect aerodynamics too much) with a small burst to disperse (into the water).

I love the testing too, all us rocket lovers do!

Pressing motors will change everything ! :D

Hopefully change in that less apt to cato.....and maybe I can get to top lighting these babies !!! :P
