50caliber
I have started getting into smoke mixtures lately and decided to experiment. I went down into my kitchen and melted 5grams of candle wax in a pan and when it was a liquid and slowly added a KNO3/Sugar mixture(50/50). it all turned to a white lump and i slowly turned up the heat and the white mass turned slightly brown so I took it off the heat and poured it into a film canister and put some fuse in, It took 10 minutes to dry and then I lit it and mass of smoke came out and a powerful rate. I think this is a much safer way to make smoke mixtures. Has anyone got a special way to make smoke?
styropyro
My way of making smoke compositions is a lot like yours. My composition is 3 parts 60/40 smoke mix to 1 part wax. I melt the wax and pour it into the premixed 60/40 mix and stir as fast as I can and keep on stirring till it clumps up and breaks up into small lumps (less than 1 cm). From here I can take it and ram it into a tube with a small core in the compostion. I plug the back end and pretty much make a nozzle on the other end. I put a little bit of meal in it for better ignition. Another way is after I take my hardened smoke pellets I put them in a metal tin with about 8 holes punched in the top with a wick sticking out one of the holes and going about 2 inches into the can. Even though the fuse dosen't touch the comp, it falls down once it's lit and light it at the bottom. This way makes it burn faster because it has much more surface area. It will put out a lot more smoke, but in a much shorter time. One weird thing I've noticed is that the thick smoke is somewhat flammable, so if you let to much air get into where the comp is burning, it turn into more of a flame. It's probably the wax vapors and I wonder if some Sodium Bicarbonate would stop that. But as long as you keep it contained enough, it will smoke instead of flame. armogedon
the way that i think is the safest is to take the materials in their ratios and mix the two powders in a blender till they completly mix.( it has worked with me)
mormanman
I agree with armogedon blinding the kno3 and sugar together works fine.If you make it and put it in a plastic bag and take a straw with some sort of rammer you can make a fuse. Its really easy to make just ask if you can't figure it out.
crazyboy25
you should seacrh the forum before posting there are pleanty of posts on this kind of thing. i have never used wax although i will try it however i usually use a 60/40 mix. first i put the sugar with 2-3 drops of water ofer a medium high heat untill it is all pale yllow goop. then remove it add the kno3 put back on heat stir till light brown and light. asilentbob
Well... since its bumped... The wax is essentially rapidly boiled out of the mix creating a cloud of very fine wax "fog" along with the normal species... if the device is choked so that less oxygen can get in it will increase the burn rate, but prevent a good deal of the wax vapor from just burning up into CO2 and H2O with a slight ammount of C. Frogfot did a bit of work on this. It would be interesting to make a citronella wax smoker... not much of a point though... too many problems to be effective. Commercial smoke generators... like the disco roller ring kind use proplyene glycol... I can't remember quite what mechanism they use though...
