HE member tutorials

I was thinking soemthing. It'd be quite fun to give tutorials directly on APC about making some HE's (It'd be lovely to post and watch other's post their synth's and processes) and I thought "hmm...well posting in the member tutorials section isn't exactly appropriate" so I thought, perhaps the mod's would like to look into making a sepperate members tutorial section that only HE qualified members could access.

Members who are qualified could post their synths, and all the exotic HE's you can imagine. It'd be a great collective database of experiments.

Here's how it could work:

it'd be just like the member tutorials, but perhaps a twist of the supplier reviews section. You could start by using "add new topic" and then you could have a list of things you could fill out before the process such as

Materials:

xxxxx

xxxxx

xxx

xxxxxxx

Apparatus:

xxxx

xxxxxx

xx

xxxxxxx

safety precautions:

xxxxxxxx

xxxxx

xxxxxxxxx

xxxx

Note:

(you could add any extra info you feel important here)

After this, you could go right into your synth and do it whatever way you feel works best.

Naturally it'd be best if the members could get photo's and the like to add to make the synth a little more colorful. Perhaps it could be done so that members could submit their synth's to a moderator beforehand so that it could be approved before being added to the board, to avoid any incorrect info that could be bad news for someone who decides to make the synth.

All comments welcome :D

Perhaps I could even make a script on some day that will be a separate page for tutorials, you have to login and if you are HE qualified, you can see both synths, otherwise only the pyro tutorials. And all members can add tutorials on their own, depending on their level. That would be if the admins approve that idea, and trust me enough. Would be a big bit of work too, but I am wiling to do that.

Ah that's great, i'd also be willing to help out with anything. I know the mods run this entire board which is a lot of work, so who knows, maybe they'll appreciate the help of loyal members too. you can count me in.

I don't think this forum wants to get involved with that level of support for HE. We are a pyrotechnics forum that happens to have a place for HE discussion.

I understand where you're coming from. It's a pyrotechnic's forum, and it's nice not raising any eyebrows. But at the same time we've formed what I think is a pretty respectable community here, and perhaps the members who are allowed access could work this in a tasteful manner, like everything has been with the new forum.

Also there would be the factor that if a mod was to approve of it, there'd be no dangerous primary synth's done by boneheads, or badly worded synths that nobody needs. It could almost be directed to more exotic things that present less of a risk to civilization than some ugly page full of people who make dangerous things without safety precautions, and perhaps almost take a sci/mad approach and have the whole "unconventional" approach, since they can just be for ameteur experiments that are merely done in the persue of science.

I have to agree with Frank on this one. We are a pyro board with a private area for HE discussion. If you feel the need to post synths and what not in there, that is up to you. There is nothing stopping anyone with access posting posts in a certain format.

Message Mumbles. As far as I know he's the only one that grants access to the HE section.

Has this idea hit the 'back burner'? It sounded as though - within limits - it might have a place here.

There are many synths out there on the www and in print, one particular synth was used in my undergrad course for mechanisms study, but it no longer gets used. IMO there is so little use to be gained from discussing HE methods and synths on a forum for the pretty effects of fireworks, that no discussion is needed by us. The professional researchers in establishments of the military are likely so far ahead that any one of our puny efforts at research is unlikely to help.

speaking of tutorials, I have found that I am slightly overwhelmed when trying to find a good starting off point for the very beginner of beginners (as in, only started making my first smoke bombs a few short weeks ago). Considering the fact that I have very little background, and a fuzzy at best science report card collecting dust in my mother's attic, what source would you guys recommend for an overview of the basics (understanding the primary chemical components, shopping and what items to purchase, safety protocols). Any direction (be it videos, sites, or even books) would be greatly appreciated.

To give a bit more info, I am obviously all-in with doing more smoke bombs (and improving my skills) but I am also trying to work on a percussion-style igniter to ignite the smoke chemicals, without having the loud bang of a primer (as most web sites seems to recommend). I have had some luck with rigging the old-school demilitarized grenade heads (sold as intruder alert things or something crazy), drilling out the hole but larger than what a primer would be, and making a tissue sealed "capsule" of strike anywhere matches and ferrocerium shavings--i tried a circle of ferrocerium and magnesium but the striker itself wasn't causing a strong enough spark to ignite the fuse). Anyway, I would be interested in some sort of knowledge with percussion style igniters (which seems to fall in the cannon hobbyists area of expertise or am I wrong?) and much more info about better smoke recipes. Eventually, I would like to move on to more.

Thanks for listening to me ramble. I absolutely am sure I am going to learn tons from the regulars on this site,. I have spent the past 2 hours reading through thread after thread--I am excited to match my interest with some solid understanding and eventually hobby energy!

Stay safe, everyone!
