hi all

have been through most of the threads about coloured smoke comps and am unsure of one thing pressing of chlorate/ sugar mixes dosnt seem to come up anywhere mine being lactose based im making red and blue smokes my question being is there a good binder suited for this application and or is it safe or effective to make a hot mix pressed i assume the density of the mix might slow down a hot mix somewhat / i would love to know the limits if anyone has experience or knowledge on this i would love to hear about it i have read quite a lot into it but cant find any thing about it

I think smoke go getters will be hard to make, given how slow the comp burns. Pressing it will likely make it burn slower too. Edited by psyco_1322

what about pressing some normal rocket fuel in half an insert , then change to the smoke comp. Prime both ends and see how you go - movement from the fuel and smoke trail from the other end?

I think you would be better off filling a tube with your smoke comp and just letting them fall after the break. I think trying to make mini rockets will limit the space for smoke comp too much, plus they will be going further so the smoke will be less dense to see good. At least not the dense vibrant colors you are picturing. You might be better off not compacting the smoke comp much so it burns faster and makes the smoke faster so it will be more dense. If the smoke is falling it might help blow out any flame that might form from a faster burn from a stationary smoke device.

You would think smoke would be easy but they can be pretty hard to get right.I think it will take experimenting on your part to get right, which will be a little more difficult since they will be moving. Non colored smoke might be easier, especially if you can't get the colors dense enough. In fact there is a formula for black smoke stars. Not to be confused with black color stars which I've made a few batches of.

That's quite an interesting smoke display. Hang time seemed exceptional for as windy as it sounded.

Thanks for sharing the vid, leedrill.

As fast as the colors appear it looks like many salutes going off and not a smoke comp burning. It has been mentioned that a dyed inert powder can be put in a salute so that the dyed powder is distributed in a colorful puff. I would imagine that is what was done in that video. One source is colored chalk line dust found in hardware stores. I would imagine you can make your own with some experimenting or maybe even use dry artist paint though that could probably get expensive. I imagine you could get some really vibrant colors that way though. Just a thought.
