Nearly one hundred spectators were injured during a fireworks display at the opening of the West Lake International Expo on Saturday in the eastern Chinese city of Hangzhou.

A scurry of fireworks, which organisers billed as low-altitude and low-pollution, fell into the audience standing by the Grand Canal, injuring at least one hundred people.

The injured were taken to hospital with skin burns.

Five people remain in hospital for observation and further treatment of their wounds.

The cause of the accident is under investigation. - The Telegraph

It looks like a rack may have fallen over and fired into the crowd, but I'm sure most of the injuries will turn out to be people crushed in the panic to get away.

I remember I was in Portsmouth for the silver jubilee fleet review in 1977, looking forward to a most spectacular firework display - I paid a lot of money for our seats. But more people wanted to get in than there was space, so some moron, noticing a large empty space, let the crowds into the setback area right alongside the mortars. How crazy was that - they were firing 8 inch multibreaks, each bigger than the last, and I think they got up to 9 breaks when a few green stars fell into this crowd and it panicked. That was that, they cancelled the whole show. Bloody pussies, not even one death.
