Interestingly, the EPA wants it contained and reported if it is discharged on the earth, yet the same chemical is a component of dry fertilizer as a source of nitrogen and phosphorus. Flame retardants are different the fire suppression chems too. Some of the flame retardants in plastics are organophosphates, which an over-exposure to causes a number of extremely unpleasant symptoms which can lead to death if untreated.
