eb11 Posted July 30, 2012 Posted July 30, 2012 ok i am looking to make a salute to test when i test out my other shells can you use bp or do you need flash powder
alexpyro101 Posted July 30, 2012 Posted July 30, 2012 If you want a really good thump you will need flash powder or another strong burst mix. You can try BP but it won't be anything near the same boom from FP. One of the mixes you can try instead of flash powder is whistle mix( it makes a pretty good report). I seem to remember hearing of a burst mix that was BP mixed with fine magnesium or fine magnalium, I can't remember which it was but you could do some research and find it, i have never tried it but some people say it works better than plain old BP. Make sure to be very careful, salutes aren't anything to be messing with, especially if using flashpowder, and if you use flash make sure to use one of the "safer mixes" like kclo4/al. no sulfurs and chlorates etc.
eb11 Posted July 30, 2012 Author Posted July 30, 2012 thank alex will do some reserch really dont want to mess with flash from what i have been reading on the web
busspuppy Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 Hold back on salutes. If you have to question your decision to do it then don't do it. It is not something you should start doing right away. Have you though about joining a club? The seasoned pyros in the club with help teach you the proper and "safe" way to do things.
eb11 Posted July 31, 2012 Author Posted July 31, 2012 have not thought about that will look to see if there is 1 in my state thanks

Xtreme Pyro Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 (edited) found a club here in maine emailed them will see what happens dan what is the ratio 70/30 70% Potassium Perc30% Dark Aluminum Just remember to ground yourself before mixing this comp.. and always mix in small quantities by diaper mixing. If you make salutes, mix it via the binary method (Put the perc and aluminum in the salute casing and close. It will mix itself from handling the device.) Edited July 31, 2012 by Xtreme Pyro
