eb11 Posted July 29, 2012 Posted July 29, 2012 just a quick question i have 2 inch canister shells that i am making i spiked the first 1 have not test fired it yet to see how i diid but i am wondering if you need to spike these shells when they are done they are aprox. 3 inches in leght and 2inches in dia. and weight is 128 grams i used 70 lbs kraft paper to make the canister its wrapped about 3 times around and then i use a piece of carboard at the top i fold over the kraft paper onto the cardboard then put on another cardboard i load the shell then do the same thing for the bottom then spike and wrap the shell 1 more time with a piece of 70 weight kraft paper. so just wondering if it would hold up without the spiking thanks
Mumbles Posted July 29, 2012 Posted July 29, 2012 There is a chance that you may get luck and it might work without the spiking, but you'll get much better performance with it. If you ever hope to move to larger shells, it is absolutely required. You may find that the final paste wrap is easier with thinner paper. I use two turns of 30lb personally.
eb11 Posted July 29, 2012 Author Posted July 29, 2012 (edited) thats what i was looking for just was tring to reenforce it thankswhat string do you use Edited July 29, 2012 by eb11
Mumbles Posted July 29, 2012 Posted July 29, 2012 I currently use hemp. I recently got a large amount from Thailand, but had been using 20lb hemp twine. You can get small rolls at walmart, craft stores, all over the internet, etc. It's used for making jewelry. I've used cotton as well, but prefer the lower stretching of hemp or linen. This is the king of all string: http://www.pyrosupplies.com/shop/page/category/Category/647698bcca6b92aff582ef0260d5adfd.html

dagabu Posted July 30, 2012 Posted July 30, 2012 i used mason line that masons use for lining up blocks was able to really get it tight The Mason's line around here is all nylon, not a good thing to use. I too got a bunch of hemp lately but I got the smaller of the hemps and use two strands at once. -dag

dagabu Posted July 30, 2012 Posted July 30, 2012 just wondering why not the nylon just for knowlegde sake EB, Nylon melts at arelatively low temperature but has an astoundingly high breaking strength. Whats happens quite often is the shell splitts at a weak spot and the nylon starts burning. Stay with natural fibers... -dag
