thechewy Posted July 27, 2012 Posted July 27, 2012 okay i made a trip to Lows today and bought sulfur dust. Its insect repllant. It say ..contains 90% sulfur and 10% other ingredients..i dont remember what thread it was in,but i remember someone saying i could use it to make bp. Is it safe to mill together or mix together? The name of it is "sulfur dust"...i just wanna kno how much extra would i have to use being its not pure sulfur, that is if its safe to use.
Zumber Posted July 28, 2012 Posted July 28, 2012 okay i made a trip to Lows today and bought sulfur dust. Its insect repllant. The name of it is "sulfur dust"...i just wanna kno how much extra would i have to use being its not pure sulfur, that is if its safe to use.it should be bright yellow visibly and when rubbed between two fingers it should give crackle sound.Such sulfer is pyrotechnicaly good.make a small batch of bp without milling and test it for any residue.
thechewy Posted July 28, 2012 Author Posted July 28, 2012 thank you for that info! Its yellow, not bight but it is very yellow. I havent tried the finger thing yet but i will asap and try without the milling
psyco_1322 Posted July 28, 2012 Posted July 28, 2012 IIRC that 10% something is clay. I've heard its ok for most general uses in pyro.
thechewy Posted July 28, 2012 Author Posted July 28, 2012 i wanted to add in, on the label its says "lilly miller's sulfur dust"
thechewy Posted July 29, 2012 Author Posted July 29, 2012 it burns with a bright white yellow flame. I mealed the kno3 and charcoal for 5-6hours then screened them together with the sulfur dust, now i can proudly say i make real bp and lift!! Feels like i graduated and got pro lol just kidding but im very happy
Mumbles Posted July 29, 2012 Posted July 29, 2012 Is there any reason you'd screen in the sulfur as opposed to just milling everything together? The KNO3/C mix is far from non-flammable.
thechewy Posted July 29, 2012 Author Posted July 29, 2012 (edited) well my kno3 source is from "spectracide stump remover" and the sulfur has 10% inert ingredients. So i did it seperate and mixed them together outside. Just wanted to be sure the impurities from both sulfur and kno3 would not have a chemical reaction and explode or anything:) just being safe about it being i wasnt sure about those damn impurities lol. Also i,ve never worked with sulfur,i always had to replace it with sugar when making things.like my rocket propellant was a kno3,sugar and charcoal- 16/4/3 and just milled for a few hours.like an advance bp rc type deal. My chrysanthemum of mysteries were pretty nice with its original comp ratio, just replaced the sulfur with sugar and got decent results.after milling a couple hours of course:). I made lots of replacements in comps using the sugar method. Not the best but its great for those without sulfur Edited July 29, 2012 by thechewy
