garyrapp55 Posted July 8, 2012 Posted July 8, 2012 I have a buddy that works for a galvanizing plant. He gave me some zinc but it was chunks. I have some steel ball bearings that I might be able to mill the zinc with. First and foremost, steel could spark, so would zinc ignite? Secondly, would the zinc mill down? I tried this once with aluminum, it was a waste of time.
shadowpatterns Posted July 28, 2012 Posted July 28, 2012 Given my knowledge I would avoid metal-on-metal milling. SP.
deadman Posted July 28, 2012 Posted July 28, 2012 It shouldn't be a problem....I've never done it but have milled aluminum. Open the container intermittently to be on the safe side to help the metal powder avoid becoming pyrophoric. It will not mill down chunks though. That is its own problem. Maybe a rotary tool
deadman Posted July 30, 2012 Posted July 30, 2012 Another thought on being down your chunks.... Im not sure what temp zinc is no longer ductile but if you bring it to a low enough temp and smash it with a hammer it may be brittle enough to crumble similar to magnalium. Someone here may know the exact temp you need to reach but id try some acetone with dry ice our just might work. If not, at least you will know what doesn't work.
