CaptRon Posted July 6, 2012 Posted July 6, 2012 I'm reading about the making of BP and everything I see references charcoal. I possibly have access to coal used in cement production and electrical power plants. I might even be able to get it pre-ground through the plant's coal mill.Is this a good option for BP?
Mumbles Posted July 6, 2012 Posted July 6, 2012 Not really unfortunately. I've heard it burns quite slow for things like BP. It may make some interesting sparks though. Some old timers will use the term "coal" when they really mean charcoal just incase you come across that.

Yea I had read that in some google searches then when I saw "Charcoal" here it was confusing at first. Thanks
taiwanluthiers Posted July 6, 2012 Posted July 6, 2012 (edited) I am under the impression that coal is designed to burn slowly to release its energy slowly and evenly. The type of charcoal used has a significant effect on the quality of your bp. Use the wrong coal/charcoal and you will get a barely combustible powder that burns like matches if it burned at all. While in English its hard to tell the difference between char(coal), hence the different name (but its still easily confused), in Chinese coal and charcoal is denoted by different prefix characters. Coal from mines are denoted with a character for "rock" while charcoal has a character for "fire" as a prefix. In Chinese charcoal is simply called "wood carbon"... Maybe you can experiment with different types of coal... I am willing to bet the more compressed form like Anthracite will burn slower than the less compressed form like Peat. I just hope that someone doesn't ask if Uranium makes good gunpowder just because he works at a nuclear power plant and can access Uranium... Edited July 6, 2012 by taiwanluthiers
