The504 Posted June 9, 2012 Posted June 9, 2012 (edited) I was milling Kno3 into a fine powder today but the color went from white to a really light brown. Before I milled the Kno3 I milled Black Iron Oxide but the container was cleaned out very well including the lead media. So my question is will a very small amount of Black Iron Oxide affect the Kno3? Edited June 9, 2012 by The504
TheEskimo Posted June 9, 2012 Posted June 9, 2012 You don't have the iron oxide in your KNO3. You have lead from your milling media in your KNO3.

bob Posted June 10, 2012 Posted June 10, 2012 If it is lead it will not affect it in black powder I did notice though that in smoke bombs it made the smoke a little darker it does sounld like the lead is the only posible anser but my kno3 would go like a really lite gray not brown
AdmiralDonSnider Posted June 10, 2012 Posted June 10, 2012 When I mill charcoal and sulphur with non-hardened lead, the batch weight actually increases a few grams. This should not happen with antimony lead though.
The504 Posted June 10, 2012 Author Posted June 10, 2012 I had it in a weird light it is a Light grey color.
Mumbles Posted June 11, 2012 Posted June 11, 2012 It will be fine for making BP if there is a little lead or iron oxide in the nitrate. It would have gotten in there anyway when you mill the BP.
bob Posted June 11, 2012 Posted June 11, 2012 a few grams is a lot how much media and how long of mill time IMO of course
