rocket Posted October 27, 2006 Share Posted October 27, 2006 I would think about using another binder other than the dextrin because it needs water, water + Al + nitrate = heating. This depends on the mesh of the Al, with lower meshes you can get away with it. shellac might work, its also a fuel so the comp may need to be changed. styropyro Posted October 27, 2006 Share Posted October 27, 2006 I just add 2% Boric Acid to my mixture to prevent the heating when binding with water, I've personally never had any problems. But we all have different results so you may want to experiement with the mixtures a little bit. I always add boric acid to any compisition with nitrate/aluminum, I dont want comps forming ammonia. But if you feel more comfortable using red gum or shellac as a binder, still add 1-2% boric acid to the mix safer. But when I use that comp as really bright star compisition, I use dextrin.
