Metal powder

The other two, aluminum and titanium, are conceptually easy to do as well. Practically however, they are more or less useless to try to make at home.

Why ?

Because lots of processing time and hard work is needed, it's not an easy work to do. Ball milling aluminum takes forever, I don't want to imagine about Ti.

If would be much more practical to find a job and invest the same time of work. With the money earned you will buy the powders in a much bigger quantity.

Atomized aluminum powder, which constitutes a majority of the powder used needs to be melted and sprayed into an inert atmosphere to make it. Flake aluminum requires special machinery and processes not easily done at home. Ball milling is a poor substitute, and will never approach commercial quality unless you're making flitters or something. Titanium is sprayed like aluminum, and possibly milled in the industrial stamp mills to make the flake. Sponge, which IMO is the most useful form, is broken down from a larger chunk. To make sponge titanium you must react TiCl4 (a volatile, caustic liquid) with magnesium or sodium to reduce it to the sponge and then separate it from all of the other molten materials. None of the things I mentioned can really be done at home.

The easier metal/alloy powder to make is MgAl. Many hobbyists make it themselves. I've ball milled Al (automobile Al-Si alloy) and it's not as reactive as commercial powder, thus it gets quite spherical. It works good only in streamers and glitters. It's a pain to ball mill, it's so slow to do it. And because of this, I abandonned the work.

I've heard Mg gets quite brittle when heated a little below the melting point. I don't really care if it's true though, Mg is a dangerous metal to mill, I personally wouldn't, though I know people doing it.

I think a member on passfire tried to water quench zinc. If it gets easy to process and brittle, maybe it would be a good idea to mill some.

So the one way road is to buy them...

There is no easy inexpensive way to atomize Al at home or in a small shop.

Nor is there any easy inexpensive way to make Ti sponge at home or in a small shop.

If there was, I would be doing it.

You can make 50/50 Mg/Al & water quench it.

Then…………..

READ THIS PDF.............................

Hi Oldgui

I'am sorry because we live so far way. I produce a Mg super lightweight wool ideal for air burst and flash powder. We produce metal powders for 12 years. Magnalium (5050, 7030) Aluminium ( flake, black, granular) Titanium ( flake, granular, hidryde) Magnesium ( granular, wool) and Fe We grind the Magnalium in a machine called galga but the mill is still very slow. This is my product:

I'm looking for a ball mill in China. This mill works with Nitrogen produces 500 kg per hour. The machine is cheap but the import is complicate.

Make a kg of magnalium is one thing, but when working with a lot of material is to complicate. We currently sell 1500 kg of Magnalium per week,I'm trying to buy a ball mill explosion proof in China, but the

communication is difficult because I think they are thinking what I'm wanting to copy their machine kkk Communication with the Chinese is complicated because they are a people very suspicious Do you now some that sell a profissional Ball mill explosion proof in USA? thanks.

I thought your communication was great kleberrios, I understood everything you wrote. Thanks for the videos too, I hope you find the ball mill you are looking for.

1500 kg per week? Wow. How did you learn there was a demand for magnalium to give you the idea to start producing it?

Hi. My factory produces magnalium since 1999, here in Brazil there is plenty of fireworks factories.

When I started the company already had all these contacts with this factories . in only a city there is more than 100 fireworks factories.

In Brazil there are only two manufacturers of Magnalium.

Hi Dag.

I've found the ball mill to buy, only that the Chinese are not responding as they should. Each mill is around U.S. $ 4,000.00, very cheap! but there are more devices that work in line with the ball mill: separators, filters, fans, etc..

In addition to selling all of these metal powders also create dozens of formulas in which use magnalium, Titanium, Aluminium and Magnesium.

Once I started making Magnalium, invented a kind of green and red strobe ( 3/8" paper tube) which is still fever in Brazil.

The formule uses no AP
