Green Organic

I see no thread on green stars so I think it would be nice to start one.

Here's a modified red organic to burn green. Cheaper to make since barium chlorate and nitrate are not used.

Potassium Perchlorate 70

Red Gum 9

Barium Carbonate 15

Charcoal 2

Dextrin 4

Rather poor green though. Will have pictures soon.

My personal favorite is a rounded off Shimizu forumla.

Barium nitrate 28

Potassium perchlorate 48

Red gum 14

Parlon 5

Dextrin 5

The direct Shimizu foruma is:

Barium nitrate....................................28.3

Potassium Perchlorate.............................47.2

Parlon.......................... ..................4.7

Red Gum...........................................14.2

Soluble Glutinous Rice Starch.....................5.6

It works just as well rounded off, and I don't have to bother with the fractional gram amounts.

It's a shame Barium Carbonate often produces a lame green color. I'm a bit affraid to work with Barium Nitrate as it is said to be highly toxic.

Just wear a good respirator (not a dust mask!!) and latex gloves. Make sure to wear long pants and a long sleeved shirt then wash them immediately after. KCLO4 is also toxic, although not as much. You should use the above precautions when working with any chemicals though. I sure don't want to even breathe in charcoal dust!

The green Mumbles posted above is a really good one! Makes a nice good green! I use the same comp with a few alterations.

I added a percent of parlon. My kclo4 is running low and i don't remember the initial test color and don't know if it helped or not. Here is a vid of the burn with a percent of parlon added. Rather hard to ignite these stars...

Do any of the non-nitrate containing greens work well?

I got one with

Barium Chlorate 72

Barium carbonate 4

Red gum 12

Charcoal 8

Dextrin 4

If anyone has some feedback that would be great. Debating whether or not to buy Barium Chlorate.

I've warned you about this once before. Only ask the question in one place on the forum. If you do it again you are getting a full warning. This is an exact copy and paste from the random thread.

Barium chlorate arguably produces the best greens. The reason for this is rather obvious... However it is more dangerous than its nitrate counterpart, as it is more soluable in water. I don't know about acid.

Haha... Damn it Robert But that does seem like a good and relativly safer way to produce a good green flame.

Damn these colours and their use of chlorates and perchlorates. I cannot wait for someone to be able to ship them here. I have been talking to customs and they can't find anything prohibiting it. Greens here are Zn based. What annoys me is I can get the PVC and Prlond and all that, but no damn chlorates.

Barium carbonate is readily avaliable in Aus and it can be converted in to its nitrate salt. I have 500g at the moment but its pure as I got it as Barium nitrate. Look at pottery supplys they sometimes even have Strontium salts and Bismuth salts for dragon eggs.

Yeah I have bout a kilo of BaCO3 and am doing a trial conversion at school on monday. The ones I want are Per/chlorates

Yeah Perchlorates would be very nice down here. I am going to invest some time and money into making a functioning chlorate cell over the next few weeks, now my study load has decreased.

I have a seemingly stupid question to ask, but what is Red Gum when refered to in pyro? I keep getting an image of a large tree, is it chracoal made from Red Gum or is it an elastic gum of sorts?

Here's a page about accroides resin:

And to add to the above, Red Gum is used as both a fuel and a binder in pyrotechnics. If it calls for 5% or so, that *usually* means it's being used as a binder (instead of, say, Dextrin). Higher amounts *usually* mean it's a fuel. But that's only a generalization, there are exceptions...

Those trees that used to be called "blackboys" contain it.

I have no idea why you think it takes a while to dry. Anything I bind with redgum is dry in a few days max. It's alcohol bound, it should be dry very quickly.
