thermite binder

hi,

does anyone know if there would be a preferred binder for thermite type blends ?

the idea would be for a small "slab" to be used for document destruction (instead of using the old cross cut shredder 2smile.gif).

any alternative low gassing compositions sugestions ?

i dont think ignition would be a problem using a lead oxide silicon prime (basically a non gassy delay)

i've seen some patents using silicone as a low viscosity binder, to create flexible sheets.

nitrocellulose perhaps ?

any ideas anyone

I've read something about using clay to make a mouldable thermite but personally haven't done it,though it might make it harder to ignite

The thing with plaster is a half truth myth from the anarchist cookbook or other similar quality literature. It's not really a thermite reaction.

Do you happen to have anything against traditional binders like dextrin or nitrocellulose? Most binders I can think of will burn up pretty quick from the heat, but hopefully not crumble or anything.

I used Dextrin(with the addidion of Boric acid to be safe) I used Silicon dioxide thermite 9:10:12 (sand:Aluminum:sulfur) smells horrable, but i've both melted the testing cup, and broke the terracotta pot it was in. I used (i think 5% dextrin, 2% boric acid) and it will light as a brick, but i granulated it(that way its not dusty, and easy to pour) i used -325 Spherical atomized Al, rubber makers sulfur, and sand....

Maybe you can get some ideas from this.

I am astounded by what you posted. Plaster will do nothing but distrupt the oxygen balance and there goes the thermite you won't even be able to ignite it. Also who cares about ice encased thermite, it will burn, and that is it.

Dave321, to your question, the thermite methid to destroy the paper is a poor choice, as I'm sure you know for the paper to burn you will need oxygen, which will not be available in the situation. You will at best end up with a pile charcoal, still readable likely. There was another thread by another member who wanted to do the exact same thing a while ago, I can't find it right now but you might want to do some searching, it should answer all your questioins.

I dont know about plaster of paris, but can't you make a type of thermite with just normal plaster and aluminium.

Thats not thermite. Its just a slow high temperature flash. I blame YouTube.

Look up the definition of thermite just so you know for future reference.wink2.gif

yeah thats where I saw it,is it a sulphate type flash

I thought that, technically, flash is a type of thermite reaction. As for "high-temperature flash", all flash is high temperature. It has to be high-temperature, or the metal wouldn't react so quickly.

has anyone used contact cement as a binder. if you realy want to know i have a few friends at new mexico tech that were working on a plastic type of thermite for emertec. i might be able to get a few tips.

Is this for a legitimate use

yes , quite legitimate personal use.

i have been looking at using nitrocellulose solution as a binder, which shows some promise.

i am quite familiar with the compositions of different thermites and themate (with barium nitrate and sulphur to lower the ignition temp).

both are perhaps a little too vigorous for my liking and need toning down a bit as it were.

i'll work on it

The whole point of thermite is to generate heat and high temperatures. HOWEVER if you try to introduce a gas generating component then the hot gasses blown out will reduce the reaction temperature.

arthur,

i agree, i think its time i consulted my copy of ellern.

i would like to tone the reaction down a bit.

on a side note i'm also looking at extrudable coloured smoke comps, using nitrocellulose.........looks promising
