Electric White/zap star

Twotails

Recommended Posts

Me, being me first set this out to be a sulfur based star. But one thing lead to another, and im left with this interesting effect.

Name: Zap star/White electric star

Creator: Twotails

Formula:

25% Potassium Nitrate

15% Potassium perchlorate

15% Sulfur

10% Copper(II) Oxide

10% 60 mesh Mg/Al (50/50 alloy)

5% Hexamine

5% Saran

5% Red gum

5% Barium carbonate

5% Boric acid

Preporation:

The Nitrate, and perchlorate are ground into a fine powder, then the Sulfur, Hexamine, Saran, and Red gum are added, along with the copper(II) oxide, This is then screened untill uniform and combined. Add the 60 mesh Mg/Al, and add enough alcohol to moisten and activate the red gum.

It is then formed into cut stars( I have not tested rolled, or any other type of star with this composition)

Prime with BP/ with Al, or Mg/Al in the prime.

The effect is a nice White, alomost electric crackling effect. It's stunning. Nice hard stars also.

I might just have to give that a shot. Though what role do the Copper Oxide , Saran and Hexamine play?

Also, can you give us a relative burn rate? Video?

Well, I can shoot a video of one burning tonight(if it dont rain)

And the copper oxide was an attempt at a blue color, But it seems it creates a thermite/DE effect with this comp? The Hexamine was a cool fule, and it was to keep the burn rate down. The saran was(if it turned out to be blue) it would have needed a chlorine donor.

IMO the magnalium will make it too hot to get a good blue. Hexamine is a good cool fuel for a blue.

Also IMO the more different components there are the less useful the comp will be as you have to have all of them to hand next time you want to make the compound.

Good blues come from perc haxamine copper (oxide) saran and a binder of choice.

Yeah, But this was going to be a sulfur based/high content star to begin with, blue was an after though(as an effect of sulfur would seem to lack visual appeal) and the Magnalium was added to possably simulate a dragon egg type crackle(or sizzle in this case) andi bought -60mesh(for dragons eggs, but its too corse and they dont light >.<) so i though i might as well use it.
