KCN color system

Due to Arthurs questions, I thought that I would post the comp for my blue shell. It's a color system that a YT member worked out, and posted on PyroGuide. It works well, and I have made the red, and blue. I saw a vid of the other colors, and they look very good.

Here's the comps, in case the link ever goes down.

BASE MIX:

MAgAl-325 10

Parlon 8

PVC 5

Charcoal 3

Red gum 4

 

COLOR MIX

BLUE--KP 60, CuO(II) 10

YELLOW--KP 45, KNO3 15, NaNO3 10

ORANGE--KP 50, CaNO3 20

RED-- KP 45, SrNO3 25

GREEN-- KP 50, BaNO3 20

Combine the basemix with the color set in a 30/70 ratio.

Bind with NC. Can also be bound with dex+alcohol, or plain acetone. Prime with benzolift.

They can also be primed with BP+5-10%metal. I prefer this to Veline, due to brighter colors, and the prime is simple. Can be combined to produce different hues; I have never tried this.

Increase amounth of red gum, because good consolidation need 6% or more. I am making round stars with red gum and I know, that 4% is not enough.

He is binding everything with NC lacquer. Red Gum is not the binder. How else do you think he gets away with using sodium and calcium nitrate?

Red gum is good binder, and ethanol don´t stink. Work wit acetone is awful.

I am not saying that red gum is not a good binder or the other solvents stink. Using just alcohol or another solvent would likely bind the stars just fine if the RG was increased as you mentioned. I am saying that the originator of the system used nitrocellulose lacquer to bind the stars originally. It is likely the acetone in the lacquer even used the red gum to partially bind the stars in addition to the NC.
