Pretty star

laser200

Recommended Posts

Well,,, I have come up with a nice star and need some input on it. Im sure it has been tryed before anyways...This one has a yellowish/pinkish head on it with tons of trailing white glitter. Very bright too.....

KNO3-----60%

Airfloat---30%

Sulfur----10%

Aluminum atomized 425mesh + 10%

Dextrin or your binder of choice

Of course you can play around with different percent of each ingredient. This one seems to make the sparks last longer and trail good and its really bright. I tryed some Mill and it burned really fast and really bright... My question is does anyone know if there is some danger here in this star such as moisture making it dangerous? BTW,, I pumped the stars..Have not tryed them rolled. Shot them in a 4" shell on rice krispies....Was very nice and long tails.... I will have video soon and am going to try some with a bit more charcoal next...

There is potential for an Aluminium/nitrate reaction, but don't get too scared. Adding a percent boric acid will prevent if it does. You know when it reacts when you smell ammonia.

I personally have used nitrates with atomised aluminium and water a lot, and have never had a reaction, despite never using my boric acid. However some people have aluminium that does react.

My aluminum cam pretreated with a (boric acid?) buffer from UG, and i've never *knock-on-wood* had a reaction with nitrates and aluminum.

Aluminum can't be pre-treated like Mg can be. Which grade did you get? I find more often than not, it's the other chemicals in the comp that control the reaction. NaHCO3 and Na Oxalate seem to be the big players in causing reactions vs. not.

In case you haven't realized it, your formula is the standard BP core burning composition with 10% Al.

If you make the stars with NC - lak you dont have to be scared and believe me iam now fast enough to do it with star plate ( 60 stars )

some people say the aceton is gone to fast but if u work fast its easy and no probs with reactions.

Yep...I just didnt know if there was a post on this certain ratio. The star really looks good in the air and thought maybe a newbie like me would like to try it as long as it was safe....Thanks all for the input....

I'm going to have to try this as a fountain......But with -325spherical......

Speaking of the Nitrate/Al reaction, I sometimes burn KNO3/Su in soup cans. I leave them out, and a few days later, esp. if it rained, they smell like ammonia. I thought that soup cans were steel...Why would this be happening? I don't have a prob. with this, it just seems rather stange.

  • 10 months later...

ram with care into the gerb-fountain.

I really wouldn't advise ramming this composition. I would also question using an aqueous binding system with a Mg-fuelled star. Besides all that, what has this got to do with laser200's star?

OK, you are right, I am not helping here.

Look, we all spent a lot of time lurking, getting a read on the members and getting the lay of the land before posting anything and especially before trying our hand at teaching. You have come in here with assertions that you have this incredible knowledge and experience but when I do a search on your text, it comes back that it came from a web site almost word for word. Some of the time (dragon eggs) you dont even include the directions for them. Your tuts are elementary in nature, they are not that of a person with the experience or knowledge that you are claiming.

Many of the recipes you use are old, out of date and in some cases, dangerous. Also, we define ramming as hammer on a rammer, pressing can be done by hand, with hydraulic and or pneumatic force.

I think you and I would get along fine in real life since I am you about 20 years ago (but male) and am hyper and a self described know-it-all, again, just like you. The difference is that I now know when to follow the NASCAR saying, "Sit down, hold on, and shut up!".

All that said, save yourself before you get booted off of here. Twotails will tell you first hand that I can be an ass, I am sorry, I apologized to him and others for my big mouth and they did so back to me. Take that as a hint.

Sorry Moderators, she asked... sort of. ;)

Also it is NOT a magnsium fueled mixture. The smal portion of magnesium is added to help with the ignition.

If you have fear with it, add 5 grams of boric acid into it...although it is not needed. but for piece of mind, should you try this mixture..add it.

LLL

Here we go again...

Anyka, tell me, witch metal you put into this star will react with the Boric Acid? Which metal will not be coated or reaction will be stopped?

Choose carefully, one of the two will be destroyed.

Look I am really really really doing my best to share with you things that I have made that you may real really like.

This "thread" indicated "stars."

So subsequently I put this in a thread that was presumably about different stars.

So this was the wrong place for me to share with you.

So, let me try to assimilate this: All the messages following the laser 200's star is exclusively to pertain to that one subject. Please tell; how much can be discussed about it?

so...

This entire thread was about a single person's star...a "laser 200s star to be precise.

That is correct. One thread, one composition. It was meant as an easy way to organize compositions, and find information relating to it. This thread will not make it to the 60 or 70 pages some others have, but hopefully it will remain organized.

I don't need anyone to tell me you are an a*s.

you are transparent as glass.

You are a clueless dunce.

Any fantasies you have of ever in any manner being "like me" are faery dust.

I pity the urge I have to laugh from your so off-based assertion's of me.

So, I get booted for an erroneous misnomer. I have 3000+ friends on face book. Do I know them all?..Sure. I do know that hundreds would flood this site with demands of verification of ages of the members. This is the FIRST site or forum that did not have actual photos of its members.

Why so clandestine?

Oh, you forgot, na-na-boo-boo!

Mumbles, Sidewinder, can you vouch for me being an old geezer? Hyper and the such?

Anyka, quit trying to pick fights. You keep making a big deal over people's ages, so at least act yours.

There is no need for age verification. As I've told you before, there is no law against minors handling or making explosives. Information is just information. We're not running a manufacturing facility. Your friends are free make all the demands they like, just as I am free to ignore them all. Please, stop all the bickering, and try to be a valuable member of the community.

When you continue to make threats against me, this forum, and the members, I don't know how you can expect to be treated civilly.

Clique the last code. Make me happy.

Uh, I would but you didn't include the target. Just copy the actual adress in the browser adress bar, make a posting, highlight a word or phrase, click on the little piece of chain in the toolbar above and paste the address into the open field.

That way you dont have all that messy "code" all over the nice clean page.

This might be helpful: http://www.amateurpyro.com/forums/topic/40-submission-of-new-compositions/ Just make sure that it is not a dangerous comp-i.e. using imcompatible substances or shoddy/questionable practices.

And could you puh-lease write normally? It gets hard reading clipped sentances that have an entirely new line devoted to each and every one.

Sorry, I do need to control my temper.

However if you read over the posts you will find it that it is not I initiating any quarrels. I am just holding my ground.

I am sorry Dr. Anyka for initiating quarrels.

ankya,

If you're confused about where to post read this - it's really not particularly complicated:

http://www.amateurpyro.com/forums/topic/40-submission-of-new-compositions/

You should note that photos/videos are encouraged and compositions should've been tested prior to posting. You said you've never formed this composition into a star, saying you imagine it would work well, then go on to describe its effect in the air - is this because it has been tested by someone else? Have you tested it or not?

In pyrotechnics you must be really careful with terminology, considering telling someone to ram something when they should be pressing it could lead to a very serious accident/death. Gerb formulas containing metals and perchlorates should only ever be pressed, not rammed. You should also read up on the usage of Boric acid as you seem to be confused about its use with Magnesium.

Nice reply! Succinct and to the point. I agree that pictures or video are encouraged if not outright required of those that wish to suggest formulas.

A cell phone camera pix or vid will do just fine and Mumbles has it set up for you to upload them directly to your posting.

Speaking of terminology, the word you'll want to use is "tamp". Pretty much it means to compress with hand pressure, or lightly tap to consolidate.

Anyka, please learn some of the functionality this forum offers. In the bottom right corner of every post there is a button that says "MultiQuote". Click on every post you wish to quote, and it goes from a dark blue background to a lighter blue background. If you then go to the Full Editor, every post will be quoted separately and you can make clear concise replies in a single post. You will see an example in this post.

The Magnalium.

But, I have round tested it a number of times. In fact I have a pre-made amount I keep when I wish to use it.

You are dodging the question. Please be very clear as your current reply is not. Please don't be offended if people call you out on this. These two materials can cause bad accidents if they are mixed up.

Magnesium - Will it be attacked or protected by boric acid?

Magnalium - Will it be attacked or protected by boric acid?

It has become very obvious that, although I have knowledge of chemistry [that which has not eroded away from having it in college almost 10 years ago ] that I am certainly not "hip" upon the jargon. I wrote to "ram" it gently. Now I have learned, from you, that the term "ram" implies the use of a hammer. How about I say not ram gently but substitute the word "tamp' it.

Is that more in accordance to "modern pyro-terminology?

I have no intent of getting booted off this site. I will acclimate my terminology to conform with the "proper" terminology.

However, it would seem to me that anyone so "expert" would surely be able to decipher my meaning.

The "experts" are not who we are worried about. Anyone proficient in the hobby can look through, see the errors and know how to remedy them. We are worried about the newer members of the hobby who many not yet have the intuition to know better. Hammering that composition or wetting with water could result in a very dangerous situation. We simply cannot have our members being exposed to suggestions that make this hobby any more dangerous than it has to be.
