Using Tables in posts

Hmmm..... that's a good idea, but:

There's no native bbcode editor support for it that I know of. But I'll dig into the full editor and see what I can find.

One way to do it, although it's a big security risk, is to enable HTML posting in a given forum or forums. But that would require you to format your own tables with HTML tags, while using the editor. We never had that enabled on the old 1.3.1 version, and it's doubtful we'd start now because of the risk. (There's no way to parse out malicious HTML: it's all or nothing.)

I'll take a look at the modding sites and see if there's any 3rd party mods that can accomplish that safely.

And if anyone already knows of one, save me time and put a link here.

It's not a brilliant solution but it might be OK until something better comes along, if you put code or codebox tags around your text, you will get a fixed width rather than a proportional font and you can layout your table manually.

Heading 1	Heading 2 Something else
Item 1 Y Y N
Item 2 3.7 8.2 FALSE
Rar! ABC DEF GHI

The major downside (aside from being a bit of effort) is that the editor window will still use a proportional font, so it's really annoying to try and get the layout right, easy work around is to make the table up in notepad or something and copy and paste.

That's a good solution for now.

It's been too long for me to remember, but did the old version of IPB have table tags?

Honestly I don't remember. I was just thinking the other day that with the amount of formulas or other data, that having a table might make things a bit more spiffy. If it's not something as simple as "enabling" a service, don't worry 'bout it. :)

I solved the problem of not being able to use tables for compositions a while ago by putting them down like this:

44 Potassium Nitrate

44 Charcoal

06 Sulfur

06 Dextrin

Al ciphers have the same spacing, so anything stays lined out really well. As far as I know I have never seen tables in BBCode. I would not ever enable HTML however, as I know plenty of exploits to delete topics, gain admin rights and such. Not that I would want to, but it is quite easy.

Well, still and all, I'll see what can be done.

A table would be handy for some of the things that come up here.
