psyco_1322
Is there a reasonable way to making potassium iodide from the iodine you buy at the store? I need some to make some purple alcohol.

asilentbob
The tincture you get from stores varies. Some has sodium iodide... some potassium iodide... and other crap... So... yeah I think your very likely to get sodium contamination.
Mumbles
I'm not sure of the standard procedure to do it. Refluxing with KOH solution might work, but it would be difficult to completely clean.
Boomer
If it's just K iodide solution it can be dried and used as-is. Or adding H2O2 and HCl will precipitate free iodine. Evaporating most of the liquid will increase yield. The I2 can then be converted to the iodide of your choice, probably via HI. If there's povidone in the tincture as well, this supposedly won't work. You can thank the DEA, they make it harder for hobby chemists every day. At least they have not banned matchbooks yet, though we pyros could get away with BIC lighters. Would be interesting to know how the BIC lighters perform in a reflux with I2/sudafed at 150+ Centigrade.
