Arthur
I have several large ebooks as monster PDFs but they are unsearchable due to theyr picture form rather than a tect format. Is there a free and reccommended OCR programme that will let me sacn the files as text?
Mumbles
Pretty sure it's not free, but Finereader is one of the better ones I've ever used. There are likely cracked copies laying about. The OCR process isn't an automatic thing. You'll have to go through and correct all the errors to really be able to search through the files. I assure you this is not a short process. You may be able to get by based on how good the image scans are, but you will always run the risk of missing important info.
Frozentech
I've tried free ones ( can't recall specific programs off the top of my head ) and I decided they all sucked. This was 3 years ago, so they might be better now. The *only* program that consistently OCR's large pdf files for me is Adobe Acrobat. I can throw a 20 meg file in and it will do the whole job with no or *very* few errors. Unfortunately, far from free.
