Well, I have a break from school upcoming. Now actually. As of tomorrow night you won't see me around for about a week. The rest of the admins already know. I've been around for like 4 1/2 years straight, so I need a little break. I will be on a pyrotechnical manufacture marathon. The rest of the admins have my permission to kick 1/4 extra ass for me while I am gone. I will probably be around some tomorrow, but after that I am gone. I will see you guys in a week. Be good, or thou shall bear my wrath later.

Eh, they are almost the same thing. Spring break will have a little more drinking than my pyro manufacture marathon. That is what the night is for. Fireworks during the day, drinking during the night.

Alright, here is the list. It goes in order of what I want to do. It keeps getting longer everytime I look at it. I think it is official, I will have blacklung within the week.

 

Make 1 kilo lift and 1 kilo break

Make screens

Comet/star pump - 1/2" and 3/4"

Flitter comets

Glitter with new Al

3" and 4" canister shells with said comets and glitter

3" and 4" ball shells with said 1 kilo of burst.

Water fall

Finish or work on Ball mill/star roller

4 oz Tooling

Paper shell molds

Make Sodium Oxalate

A press

I know you wont see this till you get back but what is this new aluminum you speak of about the glitter comments? I would love to see some results or any info about the effects of differences in aluminum firsthand.

As would I. The only glitter I have made was with home ground flake Al. It did a decent job, but not as much as I would have liked. To large a mesh I think.

He is actually going to be using some regular Al that he bought. He isn't testing some new kind of Al unfortuanately.

 

Just on the note about glitters, it is best to use spherical Al or atomized rather than flake. Not sure why exactly but it just seems to work.

The reason I heard to use round vs flake, was:

"Surface area. You don't want it to burn too fast. Flake burns fast and hot."

 

Seems reasonable to me.

Whats best to use, and whats readily avaliable are two different things unfortunately :( If you mess around and experiment with flake though, you can make a good glitter.

i'm well aware he isn't trying anything new and special....but i've always made glitters using 600mesh flake or home made flitter....and neither are the right way...I heard to use 300-400mesh spherical for most glitter formulas however what is technically the best burning formula isn't always the most visually appealing type of glitter. so i await mumbles responses

So yeah, I'm back now. Give me a few days for a party. I am a little partied out from the last 5 days. I'll post more details about this later as I have some other things to attend to right now, but the week did not go quite as well as planned for reasons outside of my control.

 

You probably won't see me around a whole lot for the next couple of days because I have to catch up on all the posts.

 

About the glitter thing. Round, or atomised, or granular, or some other form of roundish shapes are usually used for glitter. The lower surface area is required for the glitter delay. There is a lower site of reaction due to it having a low surface area, and more metal can be in the glitter reaction itself resulting in bigger and brighter flashes from their being more material in it. Flake and other flatish particles are usually in what is known as flitter. They are hard to describe the difference between. I guess how I describe it is a more random time delay glitter with smaller more numerous flashes. One thing to look for is if there are a fair portion of flashes very near the head of the star. While I am on the topic, fuck -325 mesh bright Al. It can go to hell. If satan was reincarnated as a metal, it would be -325 mesh bright Al.

By the end of the night, I could have put a funnel on my head, and skipped down a golden brick road(if there was one in my basement).

 

Anyone have any tricks for getting it off of tooling and stuff? I am thinking about NaOH soln, but I don't want to damage my screens.

Ahhhhh find out what a bi%#$h bright Al is eh?? I coulda told ya that! I believe I've talked about it before on the old forum. I truly hate it....if it wasn't such a nice effect I'd throw it out the window!

 

Good luck getting it gone. My desk (in my room :o ) still glitters from working with bright Al on it. Its impossible to get the metal glitters out of the grain..... :angry:

Ok, so it is time for expansion on how it did not go as well as planned. Two rather major things happened. First of all my bearings for my ball mill didn't come. This put a huge damper on the BP and the making of said ball mill. I have everything else, but no bearings. Also, my chop saw cuts crooked. This put a damper on other things. I was waiting for the bearings so I didn't start making BP right away so that put me down on the lift and break. This also kind of stopped the shell building as the burst and lift are drying right now. Lots of drinking was also had. All in all, here is how I ended up.

 

Make 1 kilo lift and 1 kilo break - 300g of each

Make screens

Comet/star pump - 1/2" and 3/4" - I used 4 tubes to pump said flitter comets

Flitter comets

Glitter with new Al

3" and 4" canister shells with said comets and glitter - no burst and lift

3" and 4" ball shells with said 1 kilo of burst. - no burst and lift

Water fall

Finish or work on Ball mill/star roller - bearings screwed me

4 oz Tooling

Paper shell molds - just ran out of time

Make Sodium Oxalate

A press - Chop saw fucked this up

The pin is made of 3/16" brass, and is slightly tapered. It is a miracle I was able to make it without a drillpress. I am pretty much god of tools. :D

Well, at least you got SOME things done.....

 

And christ what a mess that Al makes!!

note to self: stay away from that shit.

 

I already have German Blackhead, American Dark and Firefly, and some Indian on the way. Who needs -325 bright if it's that big of a pain in the ass....
