xag Posted April 1 Posted April 1 I have availability to some copper scraps and was wondering if it can be abrasively removed into a powder or drilled to produce the byproduct shavings. Then, mix it into a star comp Copper, I've read, can produce blue flames, though I do not have copper chloride or copper carbonate, just plain copper If this is worth trying, I will incorporate it into my ariel shells.
Richtee Posted April 1 Posted April 1 Eh..the metal is of kinda limited use. But at the price of copper, sell 25 pounds and you can buy the better forms of it
Arthur Posted April 2 Posted April 2 In those countries where there are retail pyro chemical suppliers buy the chemicals from a known good supplier. If a chemical is not available then look for a way round that absence. In places where there is no retail supplier then you have to try to substitute chems from available sources, or do DIY manufacture. As a beginner it's unsafe to make random substitutions as there are some incompatibilities to avoid. Sometimes it's necessary to make your own chems but that adds extra risk and hazards to the hobby which you need to control carefully. Any experiments should start really small to minimise any harm.

Is there any use at all for copper shavings and byproduct at all ?
Richtee Posted April 7 Posted April 7 Well, you can fill a hunk of iron tube with it and set in yer campfire. I’d recommend selling it if you have a goodly quantity. Any chemical process to make it useful is unwieldy and mostly dangerous.
robbo Posted April 8 Posted April 8 There is a quite nice blue star, "Photon Blue", that uses powdered elemental copper. It requires finely powdered copper, though. 1

robbo Posted April 21 Posted April 21 Since it's not exclusively on a pay site any longer, I'll offer some of my test results. I've got a lot of copper powder so I thought I'd play with it. The formula as written rolls well with 5% dextrine. Saran (if you have it) will substitute for parlon 1:1 and then it rolls even more easily. My attempt to brighten it with 2% MgAl made a lot more smoke (in both dry and humid air) and was not worth the effort. I didn't try substituting phenolic for the red gum.
