Daddygoesboom 2 inch canister shells

I hope this is the right forum for this, if not please advise.

I suppose if there's any interest, it could go in the tutorials forum.

I've been making somewhat untraditionally made 2" canister shells for well over a year, but hadn't been thoroughly documenting them up until a few months ago.

Each one is given a number, and a complete description of contents and assembly.

If there is any interest in my methods, I may be willing to do a bit of tutorial work, ie demonstrating my homemade case forming apparatus, and how I assemble my shells.

Not everything is done by the book, but in over a year's time I've launched literally hundreds of shells and I've only had two flowerpots.

Those two happened during my original construction trials, and have since been amended.

Previously in the Comparing small shell bursts thread, I posted 0036-2 which was ok, but didn't have much spread.

I just completed making my first batch of coated rice hulls and decided to try this shell again using that for burst.

This time I only loaded 5 charged spolettes, and kept the timing equal.

I think this one came out a bit better, but I might try a little 532 on the hulls to boost the break a hair more.

Here's one with a couple of larger spolette salutes with TT stars added.

The burst is rice hulls boosted with 532 in the center and some more TT stars packed around the spolettes.

The spread isn't too bad, maybe another lift in the spolettes for a tad longer timing next time.

Here's last night's offerings:

0056. (4) #2 tube inserts filled with TT stars and 7.3 with H3 burst.

Inserts spoletted and primed with NC and 7.3

Burst placed only in center.

0057. The same as 0056, except the shell was filled entirely with burst.

Apparently I mixed up the two batches of inserts with different timings.

I will be amending the assembly procedure.

For #57 - the whole shell was filled with H3? If so, you must have a good priming system going, looks good.

Thank you.

I have a steel rod with just about the same diameter as the ID of the insert.

I ram a number of lifts using my finer granulated bp.

For priming the insert I dip or brush the bottom of the insert with my homemade NC, then quickly press the wet part into the same BP.

Being as the H3 is chlorate based, I decided to use 7.3 as the prime instead of BP.

A little experimental comparison, but hardly a fair one.

Mesquite lump charcoal, for those who are, or are not familiar with it, possesses an interesting quality of being quite snappy and sparky when first lit.

I thought I'd see how it does in place of pine for tiger tail.

I also thought I'd see how it does as a rolled star.

The unfair comparison here is that 0060 is mesquite rolled TT, and 0061 is screen cut pine.

Both shells contained various unsized stars. (pea size and smaller)

#0060: Mesquite rolled TT, unprimed, with an H3 center burst, spolette ignition.

#0061 Pine screen cut TT, lightly primed with meal D, H3 center burst, spolette ignition.

What was that? Some kind of rising effect with crackle then salute?

Was cool either way!

That was launched with some oversized lift powder.

It was a two inch shell filled with a couple packs of store bought firecrackers, some sunflower H3, and a top mounted bottom shot, similar to this one.

Oh interesting. It made a really nice effect! I've got those same Red White and Blue tubes in a few sizes. 😀

Lets see some more shells!

They all look the same, some without the rwb tubes. It’s my standard shell.

or are you wanting to see more shots?

I’ve been messing around with this stuff awhile, but have only been documenting (writing down descriptions) and numbering them for 6 months or so.

I’m in the 70’s now. I plan on stringing them all together in one video at some point, even the early stuff that wasn’t numbered.

Today was a first whack at building something sorta kinda close to a mini Maltese shell in a 2” version.

First break is mesquite TT with a sunflower h3 center, 2nd break is 5 inserts filled with mesquite TT and 7.3 surrounded by sunflower h3 with a #4 RWB tube 7.3 bottom shot.

First shot fused as always, second spolette fired as well as the rwb.

Almost 221 grams.
I’m going to go with a few extra grams of lift to get it just a little higher.

I wish there was a poll option here.

Place your guesses.

1. Meh

2. Flowerpot

3. Fantabulous.

Winners get a virtual nonexistent something!

#3 all the way!

I sure appreciate your vote of confidence!

Unfortunately, I got door #2.

Either not enough reinforcement on the bottom shell, too much lift, or maybe my lift powder is too fast for something like this.

It was exciting though!

And as a general FYI for all, I have a decent barrier for rare things like this.

Still trying to get that Maltese style break in a single canister.
All 8 inserts timed slightly apart, spaced numerically in order around the inside of canister. H3 center burst.
I guess I almost got a half circle, kind of.

Tried again using shorter timing from the start and in between.

Gave the H3 a little boost. And added a BS.

Still ain’t there by any means.

Getting closer on that Maltese thing.

2 rounds of 6 volleys 1 lift apart.

Decent spread using H3, might add 1 more lift on the second volley of inserts for more delay.

bottom shot failed for some reason.

Going hunting in the morning for it, but all in all, I’m happy with it.
