cmjlab
A while ago, I was experimenting with KCLO4 / Benzoate black match formulas, but misplaced my notes with the formula that worked really well. I recall it containing mostly KCLO4, and a lesser combination of Charcoal and a Benzoate. I searched here, FW.com, and couple different books - but can't seem to find it. Does anyone know off hand or have a functional formula? Thanks
tti82phys
There are several alternative benzoate-oxidizer mixtures mentioned here, but in the context of whistle formulae for pyrotechnics. https://www.phmsa.dot.gov/sites/phmsa.dot.gov/files/2020-10/Black%20powder%20equivalency.pdf
cmjlab
I finally found my notes, thanks. I really like the stronger burning match for crossettes, AP go-getters, etc. It burns rather fiercely, and makes lightning fast, almost explosive (with one or two strands only) quick match. dave321
so what did you decide to use in the end, ?
cmjlab
KCLO4 - 70K Benz - 26AFC (Willow) - 1Sulfur - 1Binder - 2 Mix via wet process (Oxidizer added to other ingredients after well mixed, and wet to paste for coating string) Credit: My notes say Spitfire/APC Forum, I think he used it as a spun fuse comp. cmjlab
It was nothing more than Whistle slowed down with AFC and Binder, with Sulfur added to lower ignition temp (is my non-expert opinion). Not sure how I found it originally, or why I tried it, but I use it as a 'Thermalite' replacement (though I've admittedly only seen video of thermalite burn, never in person)
Richtee
I dunno what “thermalite” is..but that formula’s gonna be hotter than a.. well, I’ll skip the off color joke here
