Alternate QM method

Recommended Posts

Odd, one needs an ATF license to purchase QM? Anyway, I have made a bit with black match and rolled tubes. PITA and a mess.

Here’s something I been working on that’s easier and neater.

Take straight mill dust and make a paste with 50/50 water/methonal. Cut a strip of paper to length needed about 1.25” wide. Paint on slurry kinda thick and fold it onto itself.. splitting the slurry trail in half. Fold again and add some glue stick. fold, and glue again.

Here’s a vid of the trial. Admittedly, it was still a bit damp due to my exuberance to try it. Yeah even 58 year olds get excited once in a while :D

I have high hopes for this stuff. Thin and easy to make.

I suppose one could add some dextrin for durability. I have not tossed this stuff around while dry to see how well it stands up.

But the fresh stuff works well.

A second test of the “painted” quickmatch. It’s dimensions are 2mm thick, 7mm wide. Quite small... allows a better fit in the tube. I used 5% dex in this batch, and as you can see... abused the pipe pretty good to see if that would be an issue. Apparently not :)

Oh here’s a YT link if ya don’t wanna DL it. Or..if you LOVE the YT ads :D

Very cool, I'm going to have to try this method.

It can work... but, it falls into the category of tissue paper meal powder fuses, sure it works, but if you lose BP in a section time and even reliability van be an issue... you can do it faster using kraft paper tape, mask about 1/4" of the adhesive from the edges and dust it with meal, peel the edges and join them... fast but expensive, and tends to burn.

I have no long term data on this. Like I showed I rolled the QM into a disc and let it go trying to create a failure. Seemed to function fine. And it don’t stink :D

I don’t keep stuff around a long time. Most of my projects are a week long venture at most. Now I am building a few things for Independence Day, but not the QM yet.

  • 1 month later...
I am going to give this a shot. I just found a roll of masking paper for painting. Basically it's a 3in wide strip of craft paper that is gummed only on the first inch of the edge. I just folded it and it looks perfect. I saw a YouTube video where some wood glue was used inside the paper and dry powder sprinkled on. It works good in the video. He bent it all up and it still worked. I do not have a lot of spare time for this Hobby and anything that saves time would be awesome. If it works out I will post up a video.

I ended up trying it with a Twist. I used a 1 inch wide piece of masking tape as my glue. Covered that with powder and wrapped it up in paper it worked fine. But in the end it was more work than making black match. I just made my first batch of black match tonight. I was able to come up with a method that does not make a mess. Film at 11

Well, if you already HAVE BM, that’s different :D Still more work IMO, tho.

And I used a slurry, painted on, not dry powder or stinky burning tape. Plain copier paper.

I am also a cook. And one thing about a new recipe... cook it as-is. Try it, and THEN make changes. Most folks make changes out the gate and never get the real base dish. And I just made 6 “sticks” in 2 min.

I had to go back and re-read the thread I am pretty much replying to the wrong subject LOL the guy I was thinking of was using a similar method but he was just laying down some wood glue across the paper and adding mill dust and closing it up. I still have some slurry I'm going to try your method. My black match turned out a little crumbly and then I realized I forgot the dextrin. My memory is definitely failing these days LOL😊 Edited by Uarbor

OK..I did some practice runs on 6 small shells. Had 2 fails. Well, not really fails, they launched 3 mins later. That’s unacceptable. I gotta work a little more on this stuff. Meantime, just made 75 foot of BM and gonna roll tubes. Sigh. What a PITA. Dammit!

On edit: I think the fails were from the same batch. I had made about 6 batches total. Maybe 6 sticks each... a sheet of paper. Gotta try to think back on what I did different. The ones that worked worked well. Bam-BOOM! But... I don’t have enough time before the 4th to figger this out. But- I will :)

OK, I have done a little more work on this. It appears you cannot use straight mill dust. You need to have some grains in there. Air gaps is what I figger, for the flame front to travel down. So, dust and maybe like a 3F 50/50 mix, bound with 5% dex. Paint it on like thick paste and fold it up. The first batches I made were from corning leavings and had some grains in there. I went to straight dust after that and ran into trouble.
