Question on stinger missle spindle length...

I was just wondering if there would be a difference in performance between the tooling that Caleb makes and the tooling available at Firesmith. The only difference between the two besides the coatings is the spindle length.

If the nozzle diameter is about identical I'd go for the longer spindle.

 

I tested several stingers based on the Rocket Tool Scetcher proposal using a slightly tighter nozzle from the start.

It was not possible to pop them with hot nozzleless fuel, so I figure there is still some headroom.

 

Also, depending on where you live and how your raw material situation is, You might not want to use ballmilled fuel/fuel that contains so much workload, but rather some kind of greenmix, where a tighter and longer spindle is very beneficial...

Stingers are pretty forgiving and easy to make. In any spindle length, the issue isn't with lifting power but the alteration of the center of gravity. Stingers can easily lift well more than they can safely carry due to spin stabilization flight being really erratic with a heavier payload, and thus, a much higher center of gravity. I prefer using my spindle (FireSmith) since the slightly shorter length leaves more room in the motor tube for delay comp (cause you want a whole bunch of aluminum, titanium and charcoal sparks, right?!?) and any sort of heading (salute, stars, etc...). Just use the hottest BP you can make with a clay nozzle and you're good to go. If you haven't read my tutorial, be sure to check it out
