Firefly aluminum and black powder rocket

Great Question!

Just add Ti (Titanium) to your Delay.

Never add any kind of Metal to your Fuel/Spindle Area.

You can add 80 Mesh/Course Charcoal to your Fuel after you Ball Mill your Black Powder to create a Sparky Trail Effect.

(After you Bal Mill your Rocket Fuel, Hand mix the 80 mesh Charcoal into your Rocket Fuel)

thanks. I am going to add some spherical titanium to the delay. Do you think this will change the burn rate? I assume it will not change the lifting power of the rocket because it is not in the spindle area. I decided to experiment a little and use some of my 12 mesh homemade Birch charcoal check out the video. Birch makes a lot of nice sparks for Tiger Tail also

Last night, I fired a hybrid and firefly rocket using the sky lighter lampblack formula and K-102 firefly aluminum, and I can confirm that the K-102 flake aluminum does not reliably ignite in this type of formula. Heres the video.

Very cool looking rocket you have there. I gave up on the aluminum and decided just to go with charcoal Sparks

I know this post was 3 years ago but one could hope I get a decent reply. Wow that was awesome and what do you mean it didn't reliably ignite? It looked pretty good! I just made a batch myself with K102 firefly. will test soon

Btw, great rocket! How did you make it go so high and rise up slowly and almost rise up in slow motion then ignite? Was this a long motor that was longer than like 10 inches?

Based on the video, I'd agree that the metal didn't fully ignite.  Much of the tail looks to be mostly from the charcoal and lampblack component.  K-101 and K-102 are both materials available from a company called Transmet. (https://transmet.com/products/aluminum-flakes/)  They're cut squares or rectangles made from an extruded foil of some sort I would guess.  It's about the thickness of heavy duty kitchen foil.  They're fairly regular in shape.  These materials have been known to be a little touchy in getting the metal to properly ignite.  The original firefly effect was developed with a coarse hammered flake, which just from experience I can tell you that it feels quite a bit thinner.

I posted in this thread on June 10th, 2021 about some tips around getting it to ignite better and my experience with alternative metal sources.  I personally prefer one of the other grades of aluminum for this effect, but it comes with it's own set of intricacies.

What other grades of aluminum do you use? I ended up making some firefly stars and the k102 firefly could barely ignite. What a waste of 800 grams of comp! 
Should I just throw the firefly k102 in a blender and shred it a bit more?

The one I like is Eckart 41813.  You do need to screen out the material finer than a certain mesh to get the best delayed firefly effect though.  If you don't the twinkling starts too soon in my opinion and you lose that really nice transition that well made firefly stars have.  I don't recall what I used for that +30, +40, +50, something in that range.  The "fines" make great streamers still.  Pyro Chem Source is one supplier I know that carries it, but there may be others.
