Seeking a more affordable (cheap!) source of pigments for red colored smoke. Firefox-FX has the gamut, but it's dearly priced. I seek to acquire only a few ounces, or if needs be, a pound. Where should I be shopping? Thanks in advance, I appreciate your comments.

You'll need to buy it by the pound, like everybody else. A pound will not take you all that far. Precisely what pigment are you seeking? "Red" doesn't give much assistance.

Try Skylighter.

The prices of smoke dyes rose dramatically after the explosion in the industrial park in Jiangsu, China two years ago since much of the precursors for many dyes was produced there.

The market has recovered somewhat since then but as we know the price of any product seldom goes down all the way to the original price after an increase.

Most flame colourants are used at about 10% by weight, but smoke colourants are expensive dyes used at about 50% by weight. Add to that the fact that smoke dyes sublime to dyes in the air and will usually permanently colour the surroundings (grass, sand, tarmac, concrete, clothes etc) and smokes instantly become very attractive as a colour but quite a problem from staining.

While you can shoot and scoot a shell or cake, you leave evidence of a colour for a month or so wherever you test or fire smokes.
