Salute cannon construction

Hey guys, got a question about construction of a salute cannon i was looking it, strickly for noise. Just using regualr goex bp... seen a few of thick seemless steel pipe, and a thick plate welded to the bottom and hole down bottom for the fuse.... is that pretty much a salute cannon? Vs machining one out of solid steel and being crazy pricy?

Like for those that have machined em... is it just a solid piece of steel with a hole bored down the center with a hole for the fuse in the side? I want one but welding a thick pipe to a plate seems alot easier then paying a machine shop

This is one place that strength is critical and I have personally seen welds ripped apart like Elmer Fudds shotgun in the cartoons. Is there a way to make a welded one safe well yes but the labor and expense would be just as much as the machining. Your life and most likely others will depend on it not failing and trying to save some cash is just not worth it. Get it machined and you will have something that will last a lifetime with proper care.

Any steel tube that is used as a barrel for cannon or firearm

must be stress relieved before use. If the barrel should

have residual internal stress buildup due to machining or

manufacture it will be susceptible to low pressure rupture

or shattering. Once stress relieved by heating the barrel

to 525-550 degrees Celsius then allowing it to cool very

slowly to ambient temperature the steel will be very tough

and shatter resistant.

Of course it is possible to strengthen the barrel if desired

by very tightly winding around its exterior a very strong rope

or wire.

As long as the Black Powder used as a propellant charge isn't

too fast burning or brisant the barrel should be quite safe if

just using it for salutes and not actually firing a heavy projectile.

This Blog has much information on how barrels are manufactured

by the major manufacturers and what steps are taken to make

the barrels very tough.

Welds are for bombs pretty much. You want a machined and treated device for this stuff. And as mentioned, if you DO fire golf balls or...I seen bowling balls... doubly important. That’s a cool link Seamonkey... thanks.
