I have a question about d1 glitter could you substitute red gum for the dextrin and wet with alcohol to cut the stars also could you do this with charcoal based stars as well to cut the drying time

Unlikely. Glitters tends to be fairly sensitive to various effects and additives. I believe people have tried what you describe and it kills the effect. I have heard that NC lacquer has been used with some success.

 

The same may be true with charcoal streamers. they tend not to be overly successful or at least straightforward with phenolic resin.

The best performance of D1 glitter IMO is pumped with small amount of water, only the necessary to when you press it in the hand make a solid block.

So you really can't cut glitter star comps then

It's been done, but you don't usually want to get glitter comps overly wet/having the extended dry time due to potential reactions between the Al and KNO3. It's probably easier to get away with on smaller stars that will dry fairly quickly as it is. But normally glitters are pumped with a minimal amount of water.

what do you mean the effect is course do you mean the stars are more bushy more sparks if that's the case that would be fine by me

This is more of a trend, not a rule. Try out a comp a few different ways and see what you prefer.

 

By coarse i mean larger, but less frequent flashes. A pumped star may have a fluffy tail with almost shimmery flashes. A cut star may be more granular in the tail with a more flashy glitter effect.

As long as they're dry storage shouldn't be an issue
