Thick cotton twine soaked in a KNO3 solution will smolder.

so just like sugar and kno3 in a pan to make smoke mix. but instead just only using kno3 and then adding the cotton twine. and after that removing it and letting it dry?

A cigarette makes a long-burning smoldering fuse.

Not the “new” ones :D Damned things go out if you don’t actually smoke them. Sometimes even when you do

I like smoke! On food or in the air equally well.

What is the most efficient mix of KNO3 and H2O though?

A saturated solution is as good as you can get. Boil some water and stir in KNO3 until it won't dissolve any more.

The old texts give lots of formulae some involving mercury and lead compounds that may not pass state of California regs! Sometimes you do have to read the old books.
