I was wondering if I could add some potassium nitrate to my 6-3-1 rocket fuel to make it a little faster my 8 oz rockets are slow to launch I thought maybe bump it up to 65-30-10. Just wondering if I could but it back in ball mill and add some potassium nitrate just need to know how much to add or should I just make a new batch?

The performance of a BP type composition is dependent on the processing history as well as the formula. In principle, your intuition is correct. The addition of KNO3 will push the 6-3-1 mix closer to the optimal 75-15-10. The determination of the optimal ratio for your tooling and process must come from experimentation.

I ball mill my black power for 2 hrs then add alcohol and rice it with an 8 mesh screen I'm using red cedar charcoal and Wolter tooling if I use my 75-15-10 I get 100% CATO Edited by Tim1877

70-20-10 is another common, but somewhat stronger mixture. Adding KNO3 works along this line. Adding 20g KNO3 to 100g of your mix would give an approximate mix of 67-25-8, which should be decent. 33g to 100g of your mix is 70-22.5-7.5 which is probably about as close as you can get without a new mixture.

You might want to ease your way up. Milling the fuel is going to edge on the hotter side of things compared to the somewhat more common screened fuel.

I was planing to mix 60-30-10 and 75-15-10 until I discovered mi BP was tame. Prime suspect the charcoal. The idea was to make two small batches, mix 50/50 of both compositions, and test. If the rocket didn´t cato, try 25/75. You see the idea.

You can make an small batch of 75-15-10 and try diferent mixtures. When found, you can make the needed cuantity of 75-15-10 to add to your current batch of BP, and screen mix. This have the added advantage of maintaining the sulfur proportion constant.

Thanks for the advice I added 20 grams KNO3 milled for 2 hrs made 4 rockets this afternoon and big difference in the power of my rockets
