vendrite
Wizards, Can I replace dextrin with sgrs 1 to 1? If not what ratio? Is water the best or mayby only solvent for sgrs? As you can tell I have very little experience with this binder.
OldMarine
I found I can use a it less SGRS than dextrin in my black match. I've not tried it in BP but it works 1:1 in most star comps but binds better and works much better when cutting stars.
Mumbles
As far as I know water is the only, and thus best, solvent for it. It's less tolerant of alcohol mixed in with the water than dextrin is. I add just a splash of isopropanol if necessary to break surface tension, but keep the amount low. As OldMarine mentioned you can probably get away with less SGRS than dextrin, but 1:1 doesn't really hurt anything. Be aware that while it has many advantages, it does have a few disadvantages or at least things to be aware of. In my experience it tends to take a little more water than dextrin to fully activate. It also takes a bit longer than dextrin to activate. If you're impatient, you can over wet it without knowing it. It will continue to progressively activate for about 20-30 min. At least when cutting, I like to add about 75% of my anticipated amount of water, mix it in and let it sit for a while to do it's thing. From here it is easy to get up to the appropriate consistency with a spray bottle without too much delay. There is also this really hard to work with consistency at times. It has this intermediate consistency about like pencil erasers. It's stiff and hard to work, and wont want to mold back together easily. Just beyond this state it is great for cutting as a patty. For a loaf box, you probably don't want to get there at all.
vendrite
Thanks for the advice, it really helped. I've had 10 lbs. of SGRS that came from PyroSupply maybe 8 or 9 years ago and just now starting to use it. I've got to get busy if I'm going to use it up, but a life time supply is always good. Maserface
SGRS is a treat to use when pumping comets, but when I tried it for cut stars, I was not able to pack it into a loaf box, its just too "tough" like mumbles said. That said, it rolls out into a patty pretty well for cutting that way.
vendrite
Thanks All, Made up 1000 grams of Lloyds buttered popcorn this evening with 5% sgrs. Added 5.5% iso. alcohol and h2o mixed 1 to 3. Pumped 1 3/8" comets with 2000 psi on comp. They pumped well, I had already pumped some 3/4" comets with a gang pump. Both pumped very well, really pleased. I had previously tried Lloyds formula, it's a keeper for sure.
calebkessinger
I do like the buttered popcorn!
Mumbles
I hope it binds fine, but as I mentioned alcohol is a problem. That's a lot of IPA for SGRS. When I said I added a splash I meant it.
CityPigeonPyro
I visited on of our authentic Asian markets today and saw that they had Rice starch but it did not say it was glutinous. Have any of you heard of or tried using this as a binder?http://www.foodland.at/sub/foodland.sk/shop/product/vinh-thuan-ryzova-muka-400g-80.jpg
davidh
That is not the right stuff.
stix
Yep. I went through the same issue. Rice Starch, Rice Flour, Soluble Glutinous Rice, etc... etc... If you are keen, it's not that hard to make.
CityPigeonPyro
I wasn't sure but I figured someone on here would know. We went to eat and that market was right next door. I figured I would look and see. Going to stick to Dextrin because it is easy to get and or make. Was just hoping to get some of the "authentic" ingredients.
