NeighborJ
Chlorate whistle is what comes to mind. I haven't played with it but I know many have and they will usually mix it with perchlorate to desensitized the mix.

NeighborJ
It could be chlorate and KHP. I use the KHP and perc on shorter spindles and WOW they are powerful, I could only imagine them with chlorate.

Wolverine
Aside from maybe perch/benzoate with no catalyst I don't know if I'd consider whistle the best for newbies. I know I'm being a little hypocritical as it was my favorite from the get go but I stand by it. Whistle is strong stuff and can be quite sensative.
Wolverine
To illustrate my point the whistle in this video is unconfined. Also note it's effect on the blast shield. http://www.wichitabuggywhip.com/fireworks/extra/500gramwhistleselfconfinetest2.wmv
NeighborJ
Here's a test I did on my first batch of whistle from 3 summers ago. It was placed in a condiment cup from McDonalds and couldn't have been more than 2 grams.
