Ball mill barricade

I have sandbags and my old form that would usually sit in my garage but I was thinking about digging a hole and burying it in my backyard haha!

Has anyone ever done this?

I figured I just go ahead since its just dirt and realistically safer than being in the garage.

Can you find a big tyre that will encompass the mill?

I actually have some tires off a ken worth truck that could fit the bill. Bury it like two feet put the tire in the hole and then put the mill inside the tire. It would actually work well considering the rubber drums just lift right off the roller arm, eliminating picking up the whole mill.

I feel a lot better already haha I hated having BP milling in my garage next to my sports car

If that's all that's holding you back, I'd be happy to hold on to your sports car for safe keeping. :)

It can't be too much fun lying on the ground reaching down into a two foot deep hole to retrieve a ball mill. Above ground barricading wold definitely be more comfortable. Just a thought.

A 24" tall sandbag enclosure should be fine. If a mill goes it won't have enough containment to blow the bags and anything projected upward will come down with only weight/mass and gravity behind it. A half inch lead ball falling from the sky at terminal velocity could be deadly but if your enclosure is small and tall enough, you'd need to be standing next to it to get hurt.

Unlike Lloyd and the rest I've never studied safe ball milling but like Lloyd I've been meticulous in my treatment of explosives. The safety rules apply across the board though so I adhere to them.

A sloped berm of sandbags 2 feet taller than the possible hazard and no more than one foot distant on either of the four sides will allow the blast force to dissipate upward rather than out leaving the sides intact.

I actually pulled the last of that paragraph from a notebook on disposing of 60mm mortar duds. Way worse than a bad ball mill but still applies.

I'll hold on to the GTR for you. I already have a tuned Ralliart, so that pretty much covers the EVO stuff for me...

Should have all bases covered like that, yes?

B!

  • 2 weeks later...

I am still in the process of building my blast containment. The advantage I have is the nearest house is 800' away and the

I mill in a bottom swampy area. If I dig 2 feet down I will have a fish pond.Eventually It will be sand bagged.Anything wrong with using

railroad ties?
