lloyd
For those not following, check out any of the network feeds for info on the HUGE hotel fire that started just hundreds of feet from the site of the NYE fireworks show in Dubai. They're blaming it on a "short circuit", but I have problems with that, considering that they reported it while the fire was still burning actively! <G> The NYE fireworks went as-planned. taiwanluthiers
In countries like that I wouldn't be surprised. You seen electrical work in third world countries? Short circuit is the most common cause of house fires there.

MrB
Dubai is hardly third world... But by the speed the fire spread, you'd thing they used some sub-standard building code. That fire, even the poor newsfootage i've seen so far... is scary as hell. Further reports will probably show what happened, if Dubai officials doesn't try to cover it all up, trying to save as much tourism credibility as they can...B! taiwanluthiers
They are hardly "third world" because oil has made them rich, but rest assured the people, government, regulations, etc. are all third world standard. Not different than my country which is "first world" on the outside but their people and regulations are all third world, and poorly enforced. Inspectors are routinely bribed to sign off on substandard work. A lot of times they build these "modern" stuff for tourism, and give foreign visitors the illusion of progress, while their average citizen still wallow in misery. Just like Saudi Arabia is hardly third world but they still behead people for their beliefs, almost like the 1400's.
