It's rather hot and dry weather right here which is favourable for making strontium nitrate based stars,so made some and fired a 70 mm shell and would like to share with you.

Thank you :)

Due to non-availability of plastic and paper hemis right here I usually make newspaper hemis myself or use plastic kids’ balls for my shells. This shell was made of ordinary plastic ball for kids. I cut the ball in two halves and made a hole for spollette and fixed it with glue. After loading the shell I mated two halves firmly and fixed it with masking tape. Then I applied two layers of kraft paper and finally pasted with two circular pieces of cotton fabric and wood glue from pole to pole. So it may be called a hybrid shell.

Thank you :)

The pink fuse is not homemade.

It’s actually a visco fuse with burn rate of about 3sec/inch which is recently available right here.

@debubisu I think you actually wanted to know the composition of stars. It was a slight variation of ‘independence

red’ and regarding visco, I don’t know the right location as I got it from a friend.

@asdercks Thank you :)

Please check out post #3 for your answer.

Dear Ben,

Did you use Parlon in the modified version of "Independance Red"? If so, under what name it is sold there?

Nice shell!

I wanted to experiement with pasting shells with heavy cotton fabric, like old blue jeans since it is so strong but never got around to it. Glad to see my thoughts might be in the right direction, as it worked out quite well for you!

You can substitute shellac for redgum and pvc for parlon but you will have to change the proportion of the ingredients of the composition especially mgal and pvc to achieve an acceptable red star. Following would be a good start for you-

Strontium nitrate-50

Magnalium50/50 (200 m)-22

PVC-12

Shellac-10

dextrin-6
