copy this effect?

i want to copy this effect

it is an ematch firing in the following vid.



I've tried loads of stuff......not really getting there

any suggestions as to what might work?

I'm sure this isn't what's going on, but coincidentally enough that looks a lot like a scaled down version of the "lightning bolt effect" that skylighter sent out in their email today. I don't know if you're receiving Harry's emails too, but here's a link to the effect just in case you're not.

not really applicable to the original post, but I know where you are coming from

bp and ti on an ematch blank does not give the required effect

Have you tried using a more energetic e-match material? I've seen some pretty impressive spark balls shot off of e-matches which used an inner layer of Chlorate/Sb2S3 and an outer cover of BP with Ti. Basically the e-match itself is the explosive, and the BP/Ti is the spark producing component and contains the inner layer somewhat.

ive tried chlorate /ant trisulphide with ti added..........not quite there

 

I try a bp/ti mix as you suggest on top of the chlorate/ant sulphide layer maybe that will work better

I have made some similar burn speed comp. with fast bp meal made with balsa or tree of heaven charcoal, plus 10% Ti sponge and bound with double base NC lacquer.

 

Just made the NC lacquer to honey constancy and added just enough to the comp. to make a stiff dough.

You should be able to use single base NC, some how the NC binding made the comp burn almost instantaneously.

 

I have used it as a hot core for stars after outer layer burns away to the core the star self propels with a flash of silver sparks, if you light them on the ground they take off meters into the air.

that was part the way there but the chlorate /ant sulphide did not supply a sufficient "spread" of sparks

looking at the vid they really do get dispersed well with quite a loud crack

You might need some slight confinment to get the spread, maybe a thin wall plastic cap or a few turns of paper.

There definatly is a slight report heard in the video, another option might be to use 70/30.

I wonder if you could take a half of a glycerine gel cap used for medicine and vitamins and put an e-match in it and then fill with BP/flash/chlorate-antimony and Ti and then seal the end with NC to hold the powder in. And cover the cap with a coat to water proof it since they start to get soft when wet. The loose powder might burn a little quicker and might toss the Ti sparks a little further and get a bit of confinement from the cap.

 

Empty caps are available in health food stores and come in different sizes. You might also be able to use a little piece of paper and make a mini puloma cracker or even a little ball of saran wrap or corner of a sandwich bag closed with a piece of string. A coat or two of NC might help containment and water proof though you probably don't need that.

 

I don't know if a flash is bad and you are mainly looking for a spray of sparks? If so the chlorate and antimony might be the better mix since it is a dark report composition. However, it is quite sensitive to shock and friction which may be bad though I'm not envisioning very much being used if one were to pop. Perhaps perchlorate would help with the sensitivity. Other fuels like charcoal, sulfur, sugar, etc may give enough energy and heat to toss out the burning Ti without much of a flash.

 

Just brain storming a bit and trying to throw around some ideas. Maybe something will spark an idea for you or be worth trying.

They do make the plastic end plugs used for reports in many different sizes. The right amount of 70/30 with some fine mesh titanium will produce this type of effect. The 1/4" ID end plugs work great for time fused inserts, you should be able to trim them to any length to adjust the powder content and use hot glue or CA glue to secure an igniter into the end of tube.

but this is a small, ematch type product

I have the maufactures video of the effect which I could show you but I don't know how to attach a video

I looked at the website and one of the other video's shows a better view of the size of the squib. It looks like they are using a material coating the electric squib. I would assume this material would be along the design of an armstrong type mix or a small amount of an HE.

I want it as a spark hit as in the video.

its not to ignite anything else

yes, I am coming to the conclusion it has zirconium (for the fast high spread flash)

and titanium for the sparks
