It's good practice not to "stand over", or have the setup angled towards you, in case something does happen, but the reality is, it's quite unlikely to ever be a problem. You should be able to hit it with a quite heavy sledge-hammer, at all your force, with a running start, and it shouldn't matter.

B!

Although highly unlikely it will cause an ignition, it is also a good idea to have a bucket of water nearby. This bucket of water isn't with reason to put out a fire, but it is to immerse the hands in case they are badly burned.

The only time this could possibly ignite is if the drift hole is not cleaned out or the no pass lines are not observed. In these cases the pressure exerted on the comp will be exponentially higher than at the face. Just clean out the drift hole every increment and there is no risk of ignition. Also only use the tooling for BP, if it has ever had a Chlorate or perchlorate comp in the tooling then there is a chance some still remains and will make the process a whole lot more sensitive to shock.

If you use a delay containing metal, make sure you only use it above the spindle as it can cause both damage to your spindle and possibly ignite the fuel. As stated above, I check my do not pass lines on every tube to insure I have at least 1/2 an increment of fuel above the spindle before changing to the delay comp. I have a press but still enjoy hand-ramming my smaller rockets.
