time rain formula

I've been playing with time rain microstars in a matrix star. With a formula of 70 CuO, 20 Mg/Al, 10 Ti, I did some calculations and to get a balanced equation (figuring that it is a copper based thermite) the ratio was 5:2 moles. Figuring for molecular weights that comes out to Mg/Al at .26 that of the CuO. The formula for the comp is close but not exactly balanced (it's a little short on the CuO). Is there a reason for the formula to not be a balanced reaction? Or was it just rounded off (somewhat poorly)?

If you look at all the different crackle compositions that are out there, you'll see that the vast majority contain a significant excess of magnalium over what is needed for a balanced reaction. I don't know why, but they do seem to perform better than a balanced mix.
