With a formula of 70 CuO, 20 Mg/Al, 10 Ti, I did some calculations and to get a balanced equation (figuring that it is a copper based thermite) the ratio was 5:2 moles. Figuring for molecular weights that comes out to Mg/Al at .26 that of the CuO. The formula for the comp is close but not exactly balanced (it's a little short on the CuO). Is there a reason for the formula to not be a balanced reaction? Or was it just rounded off (somewhat poorly)? Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
RichardH08 Posted December 1, 2016 Share Posted December 1, 2016 If you look at all the different crackle compositions that are out there, you'll see that the vast majority contain a significant excess of magnalium over what is needed for a balanced reaction.
