Pyro dark 1 micron Al machine. My process.

Forget everything you've seen so far about ball mill .. this is safe, portable, low-maintenance, inexpensive, produces 20 kg black 1 micron Al per day, easy loading and unloading without danger of explosion, (it is Open). You can work with inert gas injection or atmosferic air.

Out of curiousity what sort of media are you using, and how do you grade or ensure the final product is that fine?

The "burn test" . As finer the media, thinner Al, and the faster the burns, so I avoided the cut in the video at the time of firing, to have no doubt of the veracity of the process.Do not confuse burning rate of a pure Al, with Al contaminated with oxide, who also fast burn, but it will be weak.

10mm, 5mm, 3mm ball media. Recalling that it is not all 1 micron, as will still be "sifted by floating in the air" to reach one micron and even nano (some particles) in the next video.

Here not work with salts, only powder metals, salt is only for small quality control tests. But only give a destructive effect if pcl was intimately mixed with Al. Though the accident Pepcon the aluminum barrels reacted with AP ...

How much trouble would it be to make a reliable "scrape test" rig, and, would you have to make a slurry with the product to be able to test it?

(This sort of test-rig)

 

I think you do have to make a slurry, but i suppose that's not the end of the world.

 

Also, i say "make" a reliable tester, since the prices of those things seam counter productive for home use. As a producer, kleberrios might benefit from having one, but outside of that...

So the media is a mixture of 10, 5, 3 mm ball media? What is the material? Steel? Are they ball bearings?

 

You mention contamination with aluminum oxide. How do you prevent an excessive amount of oxide from forming? Ever add charcoal or stearine or something to make a protective coating of the aluminum particles?

 

What is the aluminum feed stock? Cheap atomized aluminum? Do you buy it or make it?

Diesel lubrificant.

Al feed stock 80x 200 mesh hammer mill granular powder . ( see my hammer mill video).

 

atomized 200 mesh Al is more indicated but is expensive

How long do you let it run? A full 24 hours?

 

Are the ball bearings stainless steel or chrome coated? Or the cheaper carbon steel bearings that can rust more easily? Do you ever notice any surface rust on the bearings? If so, concerned about the iron oxide contamination?

 

Just to verify, do you run a mix of 10, 5, 3 mm bearings? Or do you run a while with 10 mm, stop and switch to 5 mm, and then switch and finish with 3 mm bearings?

 

You use plain diesel fuel as the only coating? About how much do you add? Have you ever noticed the milled powder heating up during the process or immediately after due to aluminum's pyrophoric nature?

 

Never thought of using diesel but it is quite oily! Almost need to carry a pair of gloves around to fill up with diesel because the pump handles get so oily and don't evaporate. Since you mentioned oxide contamination, have you ever experienced this with your process?

Hope you do make a video of your cyclonic (?) particle separator! That sounds really interesting.

 

I wouldn't mind finding some of the machines you own but I bet they are not easy to track down. I also hope you wear a good respirator with all those small micron metal particles floating around! Not one of those cheap masks they use in hospitals! They barely catch a mosquito and are mainly to catch any spit that might come out of your mouth while talking that will contaminate a sterile field.

The drum has to "breathe" for any harmful component of Al be removed, otherwise it may ignite when opening the drum, as happened to me when I closed the entrance to the mixer with a plastic ... HAVE TO BREATHE !!!!!!
